Jake’s 58 shuttered its 1,000 gaming machines on Wednesday morning after workers noticed that the slot-like video lottery terminals (VLTs) weren’t functioning properly. The casino said on its social media channels that technicians were working to resolve the matter promptly.

It wasn’t a quick fix. Jake’s said it would reopen by 5 pm on Wednesday. The reopening was then pushed back to 8 pm, but that goal was also missed.

Jake’s 58 Casino eventually reopened shortly before 11 pm. The casino is open daily from 8 am until 4 am.

Casino Quiet on Disruption

In 2023, a cyberattack on the New York State Gaming Commission’s centralized VLT system rendered Jake’s gaming machines inoperable. Jake’s, along with the eight other VLT gaming facilities that operate the electronic terminals on the state lottery’s behalf, said then that a cybersecurity event on the central system managed by Everi was the cause for the operational disruption.

This time around, however, Jake’s 58 hasn’t yet come forward with further information regarding Tuesday’s temporary shutdown. Phil Boyle, president of Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. (Suffolk OTB), which owns and operates Jake’s, said only that normal operations had resumed.

We are pleased to share that Jake’s 58 is now open and fully operational. Yesterday, we unexpectedly closed for part of the day to restore a necessary casino system. Our team acted quickly, and all systems are back online and functioning as normal,” said Boyle.

“We thank our guests for their patience and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back today for a great experience at Jake’s 58,” Boyle added.

News12 Long Island and Newsday both reached out for further comment from Suffolk OTB as well as the New York State Gaming Commission, but received no additional information.

VLT Operation

Jake’s 58 and the other VLT casinos in New York keep about 46% of the gross gaming revenue that the terminals generate. Another 44% goes to the state, which uses the money for K-12 public education. The remaining 10% is to cover VLT vendors and financial costs associated with the administration of the central VLT system.

Jake’s 58 opted not to pursue a full downstate New York casino license, which would have allowed the property to swap out the VLT terminals with slot machines. The three casino licenses also come with live-dealer table games and sports betting privileges.

Jake’s folded on trying to win one of the $500 million concessions in favor of expanding and renovating its current facility. The $210 million project will double the size of the gaming floor and number of VLT positions to 2,000, bring a 17,500-square-foot VIP lounge and entertainment area to the facility, fully update all 210 hotel guestrooms, and result in a new parking structure with space for 500 vehicles.

A 3,500-square-foot events center and a 200-seat food court are also in the works. Jake’s 58 expects the project to be completed next spring.
