In January it was reported that Alberta was opening preregistration for operators looking to enter the new open, regulated igaming market.

Details were also released about the proposed tax rate (20% on 97% gross gaming revenue), and fees to enter the market – $150K annual license fee plus a one-time $50k application fee.

Spring/Summer Launch Likely

Then later, we reported that at ICE Barcelona Alberta iGaming Corporation Interim CEO Dan Keene hinted to an industry roundtable that Alberta was looking at a Spring-Summer market launch.

“Alberta’s move toward an open, competitive iGaming framework is a positive step for Canadian players, offering more choice and consumer protections in a safe and regulated environment,” said Scott Vanderwel, Chief Executive Officer of PointsBet Canada, in a news release statement.

Canadian Gaming: Company Well Established in Ontario

“We’re excited to introduce our innovative, Canadian-focused sports betting and online casino products to Alberta residents, supported by industry-leading speed, responsible gaming tools, and local expertise.”

PointsCanada has been operating in the regulated Ontario igaming market since it launched April 4, 2022, and is headquartered on Queen St. W. in Toronto. The company has made its intentions of expanding into Alberta clear for several years.

According to the company, eligible Alberta residents can now pre-register with the operator to receive notification of PointsBet’s launch, along with an exclusive welcome offer, ahead of a full platform rollout when the formally regulated online framework in Alberta goes live.

Operators Lining Up

PointsBet maintains operations in Australia and Canada and is now majority owned by MIXI Australia following its successful takeover of the company last year.

FanDuel, BetMGM, theScore Bet, BetRivers, DraftKings, and NorthStar Bets are also expected to be among the first operators to enter the Alberta market.

According to statistics, Alberta’s gaming net operating income hit $1.57 billion in 2023-24, its highest level in seven years.
