The imminent departure of Casumo from the Ontario market, combined with the arrival of BetNova, will soon bring the total number of licensed operators in the province down to 47.

Ontario’s Licensed Operators Soon To Drop to 47

If you go on to the iGaming Ontario website today, it still lists 48 licensed igaming operators, and 82 websites. However, a spokesperson from iGaming Ontario said they remove sites from the public directory when they stop accepting wagers.

In Casumo’s case, that will be April 30, when all play ends. No further deposits will be allowed as of April 23. All player accounts will be closed on May 14, according to Canadian Gaming Business reporting. We haven’t been able to get confirmation of that from Casumo as yet.

BetNova Launch

Casumo, based in Malta, picked up its AGCO license to operate in Ontario in June 2022, and launched shortly after that. The platform offered themed slot machines, along with live casino games such as blackjack, roulette and baccarat.

BetNova is owned by South African igaming giant Goldrush Gaming.

The Ontario igaming market ranks among the most saturated in the world. Several operators have shut down since the Ontario igaming market went live in April 2022. Fitzdares, Unibet, Rivalry, Betiton and MagicRed Casino are some of the other brands that have taken down their shingle.

iGaming Ontario doesn’t release financial data related to specific operators, but in February, the province did $8.7 billion in total cash wagers, and $342 million in revenue, off the backs of nearly 1.3 million active players. Average revenue per active player account that month was $264.

SBC Gaming Summit Panel Discussion Highlights

Mark your calendars for what will be some of the more popular panels discussion coming up at SBC Summit Canada at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre May 19-21.

Leading off will be a “Fireside Chat with Minister Dale Nally”, in Conference Room 1, 11 a.m. on May 19, what will no doubt be the most well-attended presentation, as Alberta’s Minister of Service and Red Tape Reduction takes the crowd through what to expect with the Alberta market set to go live July 13.

“The Next Deal: Online Poker in Canada”, May 19, at 1:30 p.m., Conference Room 1, is particularly timely as the issue of cross-border, peer-to-peer igaming heads to the Supreme Court of Canada. The discussion is hosted by Michael Hearne, Director, Product Owner – New Categories and Experiences, OLG.

Betting on Ads

With a political push in Ottawa, towards banning all forms of sports betting advertising, and a bill making its way through the House of Commons, set to place new frameworks on advertising for regulated gambling, operators are wondering about impacts on marketing and affiliate strategies.

In Conference Room 2, time TBD, a panel discussion called “Betting on Ads: The Future of Sports Betting in Canada”, will delve into that. The panel, hosted by Steve McAllister, Co-Founder of The Parleh, will include Johnny Capo, CEO, betstamp, Kris Abbott, General Manager, Stake Canada, Max Levy, Director of Marketing, Bet99, and Aly Lalani, iGaming Marketing Consultant.

Another one that’s timely is on Day 2, 11:45 a.m., Conference Room 1 – “Building Sovereignty: The Rise of First Nations Ownership and Innovation in Western Canada’s Gaming Sector”. A big story in Canadian gaming the past two years has been all the land-based casinos being acquired by First Nations on the west coast.

Katie Lever, General Counsel & Chief Administrative Officer, Great Canadian Entertainment, hosts this one, which will includs Michael Peters, Chief Executive Officer, Glooscap Ventures, Michael Tobin, Founder & CEO, Continent8, and Chief Paul Rice, Council Chief, Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.
