  • A powerful winter storm is causing chaos up and down the Northeast

  • Casinos in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine remain open

Blizzard warnings and heavy snow across the Northeast are causing significant operational disruptions at some casinos.

In Rhode Island, Gov. Dan McKee’s (D) State of Emergency forced the state’s two commercial casinos to shutter. Bally’s Lincoln and Bally’s Tiverton closed at 6 pm Sunday.

We’ll share updates as soon as we get the all-clear to reopen,” Bally’s wrote on its social media channels. “Please stay safe, stay home, and take care out there. We’ll see you soon.”

McKee’s declaration remains “in effect until the threat or danger has passed or the emergency conditions no longer exist.”

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Rhode Island that runs through Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 am.

Mohegan Sun Ops Impacted

In neighboring Connecticut, Mohegan Sun is also advising guests that the resort’s operations are being heavily impacted by the blizzard. Winter Storm Hernando has shuttered several restaurants and bars at the tribal casino in Uncasville.

Mohegan Sun says Bean and Vine, Beauty & Essex, Bow & Arrow, Jersey Mike’s, MJ23 Sports Bar & Grill, Sol Toro, and Todd English’s Tuscany are all closed today, Feb. 23. TAO is closing at 6:30 pm, and there is no food or beverage service at the FanDuel Sportsbook. The Mohegan Sun Poker Room is also closed, as are certain retail shopping stores.

Connecticut’s other tribal casino, Foxwoods, has not yet made any public announcements regarding closures.

Connecticut, like Rhode Island, remains under a State of Emergency throughout Monday. But because Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are on tribal lands, the sovereign businesses do not need to comply with state orders.

The tribes butt heads with then-Gov. Ned Lamont (D) during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods reopened their casinos on June 1, 2020. In response, Lamont ordered that the Connecticut Department of Transportation place highway warning signs near the tribal casinos that read:

“DON’T GAMBLE W/COVID. AVOID LG. INDOOR GATHERINGS.”

The Connecticut casinos reopened after Lamont lifted his stay-at-home order, but kept public gathering restrictions in place.
