Gambling sites to avoid

We recommend loads of great Ontario online gambling sites, but we also have a list of places to steer clear of. Our 25-step review process looks at things like games, bonus terms and conditions, banking options, licensing and security. Unfortunately, not every site passes our tests. These are the sites to avoid:

Legal gambling in Ontario 2024

In April 2022, online gambling in Ontario became legal and regulated. Through iGaming Ontario (IGO), the province now enables casino providers to gain a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Therefore, Ontario online casinos and betting sites are now live and available to residents and visitors alike.

For a site to be granted a licence, it must pass IGO’s rigorous quality testing procedures. This includes promoting responsible gambling, providing security features, and ensuring fairness. As such, you can rest assured the Ontario iGaming market is safe.

At the time of writing, 70+ online gambling websites operate under an iGaming Ontario license, and it's clear they're popular too. Between October 1 to December 31, 2023, the province boasted 1.2 million active players making total wagers of $17.2 billion. This is split between casino gambling (79%), sports betting (18%), and poker (2%).

Who can gamble in Ontario?

The legal age for online gambling in Ontario is 19. If you're above this age and located in the province, you should be able to register at any of our recommended gambling sites. Keep these rules in mind when you play:

  • Legal age: You must be 19 or older to gamble in Ontario, this includes online and offline gambling sites. The only exception is for lotteries, where you can purchase tickets at 18.
  • Location: You will not be able to access your Ontario online gambling account if you travel outside of the province.
  • Taxation: There are no taxes on gambling profits in Canada, so you can keep 100% of your winnings. This applies to both sports betting and online casinos in Canada.
  • Local gambling: Ontario is home to 30 land-based casinos and 5 retail sportsbooks. Further sports gambling kiosks can be found within casinos. If you are 19+, you can visit these but do bring a form of ID.

What you need to gamble online

As explained above, to be able to operate within the province, online gambling providers must meet the regulations set by iGaming Ontario. This includes requiring certain information from players. To gamble online in Ontario, you'll need to provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Username and password
  • Email address
  • Phone number

Popular types of online gambling

One of the biggest advantages to gambling online in Ontario is that there's a huge amount of choice. Whether you love sports or card games, slots or bingo, there's something for you. Discover the different types of wagers you can place at gambling sites in Ontario below.

Online casinos

Online casinos

Over 79% of Ontario online gamblers favour casino games. This is probably because they're the most diverse gambling sites, with the best operators offering thousands of games. This includes video slots, progressive jackpots, table games, live dealer games, and scratchcards.

There's also a wide variety of online casino types in Ontario. Live casinos allow you to play via a video stream whilst mobile casinos make on-the-go gaming possible.

Sports gambling sites

Sports gambling sites

The best Ontario gambling sites also offer sports betting. If you enjoy wagering on your favourite teams like the Jays, Leafs, Sens, or Raptors, there are plenty of online options for play. The NHL is obviously a popular market, but at these sites you can bet on the likes of the NBA, the MLB, UFC fights, international soccer games, and more.

At the best sports betting sites, you'll benefit from live odds, in-play markets, live streaming and dedicated apps. This means you'll never miss a slice of the action.

Poker sites

Poker sites

Although many online gambling sites offer video poker games, there are dedicated online poker rooms in Ontario too. These sites allow you to play against other poker fans and you can also participate in tournaments.

Ontario poker sites offer a wide range of game variants, including Omaha, Texas Hold'em, and H.O.R.S.E. Different rooms have different buy-ins too, making them suitable for both beginners and pros.

State lotteries

State lotteries

Many Ontarians love to place a wager on the lottery, and the good news is that you can now buy tickets online too. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation runs all state lotteries and has its own gambling website.

Whether you want to play the Lotto Max or prefer those with daily draws, the OLG site has it all. It's also important to know that the legal age for gambling on lotteries in Ontario is 18, not 19.

Bingo sites

Bingo sites

Bingo is incredibly popular in Ontario and there's plenty of bingo halls across the province. Online bingo sites are also growing in popularity, offering a wide range of games and a bustling community. Play 90 or 75 ball bingo, chat with friends, and be in with a chance of winning prizes.

Other types of online gambling

Other types of online gambling

There are two other main types of online gambling, horse racing and daily fantasy sports, though these are somewhat restricted in Ontario.

For starters, Ontario sports gambling sites cannot offer horse racing markets. Instead, you can place bets in person at the racetrack, or via dedicated horse racing sites offering parimutuel wagering on horse races.

Daily fantasy sports betting opportunities are also limited. Until recently, two daily fantasy sports (DFS) operators, DraftKings and FanDuel, dominated the Ontario DFS market. However, legislative changes mean that offering these markets isn't currently feasible for operators. Hopefully this will change in future, we'll keep you updated.

How we rate gambling sites in Ontario

Licences and safety

First and foremost, we check whether the gambling site has a verified licence from the AGCO. We cross check this with the iGaming Ontario website, noting any penalties or problems the casino has faced. Only clean, trustworthy sites get our seal of approval. We then look for safety features like a commitment to responsible gambling and SSL encryption.

Online gambling product and markets

We expect the very best online gambling sites to excel in what they purport to do. Online casinos must offer a jam-packed games lobby with titles from leading software providers. Sports gambling sites must offer hundreds of betting markets, alongside other features like in-play bets and streaming.

Local payment methods

Next, we register and deposit at the site. Naturally, we're looking for sites that boast the payment methods Ontarians know and love. This could be Interac, INSTADEBIT, or simply Visa and Mastercard. Minimum deposit limits should be accessible, and payouts should be fast.

Design and overall experience

As we test a gambling site, we also take note of how easy it is to use. We want to be able to find our favourite games or betting markets quickly, and the site receives extra points if there's a mobile app. Help should also be easy to access. Gambling sites with live support are preferable. Once we've covered everything, we make a final rating.

4.6 /5

With plenty of years of experience gambling in Ontario, our experts know exactly how to stay safe and have fun. Follow the tips below for the best gambling experience.

  • Stick to licenced sites: We can't stress this enough! Always look for sites regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and iGaming Ontario. Licenced platforms guarantee a safe and fair gaming experience.
  • Set limits and stick to them: Before you start playing, establish clear limits on how much time and money you're willing to spend. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement, but sticking to your limits ensures a more enjoyable and responsible gambling experience.
  • Use secure payment methods: When depositing funds or withdrawing winnings, opt for trusted payment methods like credit cards, e-wallets, or Interac. These methods offer added layers of security and encryption to keep your transactions safe.
  • Stay informed: As the iGaming market in Ontario is always changing, it's important to keep yourself updated on the latest developments in gambling regulations and policies.
