- PrizePicks announces it will concentrate on building U.S. operations
- Daily fantasy sports operators challenged in Ontario regulated market by provincial border fencing
- Company said it will close up shop April 3
PrizePicks, the daily fantasy sports and prediction markets operator, has announced it is shutting down its Canadian operations, focusing more on operations in the U.S., the company has announced.

In Ontario’s regulated market, players on the daily fantasy sports front are required to play within the province’s borders, which has posed challenges for operators, since their success depends on larger player pools spread across different regions.
Court Challenges
In November, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled in a precedent-setting legal opinion that players in the province could play peer-to-peer games, like online poker and daily fantasy sports, against players outside of Canada.
However, the Canadian Lottery Coalition, an organization that represents provincial gaming corporations (British Columbia Lottery Corporation; Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation; Loto-Québec; and Atlantic Lottery Corporation), has led the fight against international liquidity, and has launched an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
According to reporting PrizePicks deposits for new fantasy lineups will stop March 10, and players in Canada will have until April 2 to withdraw any remaining funds, with full shutdown April 3.

Penn Entertainment’s theScore Bet is the latest to jump into Alberta’s new regulated igaming market, expected to go live this spring or summer.
The company announced its online sportsbook is now available for pre-registration in the western Canadian province. The pre-registration process allows patrons to download and complete necessary steps to create an account with theScore Bet, as they ramp up to market launch.
theScore Bet is an RG Check accredited operator.
Spring or Summer Alberta Market Launch
BetMGM, BetRivers, PointsBet Canada and Betty are some of the other operators that also have set up pre-registration in Alberta.
“theScore is Canada’s premier digital sports media brand and we can’t wait to bring our best-in-class sportsbook and casino app theScore Bet to Alberta,” said Billy Turchin, Chief Product Officer, PENN Interactive.
“We commend the Alberta government on all their efforts towards bringing regulated online gaming operators to the Province and look forward to introducing Albertans to our integrated media and betting offering when the market opens.”
