The Powerball run has led to the lottery game’s top prize climbing to an estimated $930 million for the Wednesday, December 10 drawing. The one-time cash option is projected at $429 million. Both amounts are before federal, and possibly, state taxes.

On Monday, a lone ticket narrowly missed the jackpot by matching all five white balls but not the red Powerball. The ticket didn’t have the optional $1 add-on Power Play, which would have doubled the award to $2 million.

The odds of matching the five white balls from a pool of 69 numbers are one in nearly 11.7 million. Monday’s winning numbers were 8, 32, 52, 56, 64, and the Powerball was 23. The Power Play was 2X.

Powerball Nears 10 Digits (Again)

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot of $930 million is the seventh-richest prize in the game’s history. Powerball was first drawn in April 1992.

To crack the No. 5 spot, the prize will need to continue rolling over until it eclipses the $1.08 billion jackpot won in July 2023 by a single ticket in California. Top-five territory begins at $1.326 billion.

Powerball’s richest prize came in November 2022 when Californian Edwin Castro claimed the only lottery prize in US history upwards of $2 billion. The richest Mega Millions prize ever won was $1.6 billion in August 2023.

Back-to-Back $1B Wins?

Powerball is approaching unprecedented territory, as the game stands to be the first lottery game in world history to go back-to-back with jackpot wins upwards of $1 billion.

The current Powerball run began in September after the jackpot last hit on September 6 when two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, split a $1.787 billion prize. If Powerball doesn’t hit on Wednesday, the estimated jackpot will likely climb to 10 digits.

Enthusiasm for Powerball, however, has slowed this jackpot cycle. The September run endured 42 drawings to reach $1.787 billion. Wednesday marks the 41st drawing in this run, and the top prize is “only” at $930 million, or about 52% of the September jackpot prize.

September Powerball Winners

The winners of the $1.787 billion jackpot have redeemed their prizes. Both states allow anonymous redemption.

In Texas, a trust claimed its share via a cash award of $410,324,470.28.

We are Texas true to the state and its values. We believe in family, in faith, and in the blessings that come through both. This is a moment of gratitude for us, a blessing we plan to enjoy and share with those who are special to us and who serve our community. We ask for privacy as we look forward to enjoying our lives together as a family. God bless Texas,” a representative of the trust told the Texas Lottery.

In Missouri, a married man was the winner. He, too, chose the one-time cash option of $410.3 million.

“I’m going to just do me for a year,” the winner said. “I’m like a homebody. The perfect day is sitting at home doing what I do, relaxing.”
