The Powerball Labor Day drawing stood to forever allow someone to live the rest of their life on holiday. It didn’t happen, though 161 tickets came ever so close.

The winning Powerball numbers for Monday, September 1, were 8, 23, 25, 40, 53, and the red Powerball 5. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

Millions of Powerball tickets were sold for the Labor Day drawing, but none matched the six winning numbers. However, 161 plays nearly won the $1.1 billion annuitized jackpot.

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which operates the thrice-weekly interstate lottery game on behalf of its 48 participating jurisdictions, said 12 tickets matched all five balls. Another 149 tickets matched four of the five white balls drawn and the red Powerball.

Ten of the tickets that matched the five white balls all won $1 million each. Two other Match 5 plays had the multiplier that doubled their payouts to $2 million each (the Match 5 prize with the Power Play is capped at $2 million). The Match 5 plays were won in California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey (2), New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Of the tickets that matched four white balls and the Powerball (Match 4 + PB), 124 were basic $2 plays that won $50K. Only 25 had the Power Play to triple their winnings to $150K.

There were 4,562,571 other tickets that won prizes on Monday night. The bulk of the wins — more than 3.33 million — only doubled their $2 bet to $4.

Jackpot Rolls On

Monday night marked the 40th Powerball drawing in a row without a single ticket matching the six drawn numbers. The odds of a ticket hitting the jackpot are more than 1 in 292.2 million.

The next drawing is on Wednesday, where lottery officials estimate the jackpot to balloon to $1.3 billion, with the cash option at approximately $589 million. The annuity is paid out over 29 years, while the cash is immediate. Both amounts are before federal, and possibly, state taxes.

At $1.3 billion, Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot becomes one of the game’s top five richest prizes on record. The first Powerball drawing was held on April 22, 1992 — more than 33 years ago.

No Mega Millions Headlines

Earlier this year, Mega Millions overhauled its gameplay in what officials said was in the player’s favor. While the price of a basic play jumped from $2 to $5, each ticket now comes with the multiplier built in, and the odds of a ticket winning the jackpot shortened from 1 in 302.2 million to 1 in 290.4 million.

Mega Millions says more players are winning more money, but its jackpot so far hasn’t yet grabbed much attention. Since the change, the richest Mega Millions prize was a $348 million annuitized prize won in Virginia on June 27.
