  • Padres, Yankees, Mets and Phillies big winners in MLB trade deadline
  • Dodgers still the front runner in World Series odds
  • Biggest odds movement goes to the Padres

The San Diego Padres were arguably the most active during Major League Baseball’s trade deadline yesterday and that has been reflected by looking at the biggest shifts in World Series odds this morning.

Padres the Big Winners Yesterday

According to DraftKings, the Padres went from +3500 July 29 to +2000 this morning to win the World Series (+1400 to +1100 to win the National League title, +1000 to +750 to win the NL West).

The Padres (60-49) were busy yesterday. They brought in reliever Mason Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears from the Oakland A’s. San Diego also traded for first baseman/DH Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles in their second big deal.

Judge Injury Overriding Narrative with Yankees

Padres’ general manager A.J. Preller is by far the biggest gunslinger compared to his MLB brethren. He had the prospects and had zero hesitation shopping them around to beef up his major league roster. No one expected Miller, who throws 103 mph, to be dealt to the Padres.

The Padres saw the most dramatic shift in World Series odds at DraftKings.

First Place Blue Jays Dance Around the Edges

Is that enough to catch the Dodgers, though? Remains to be seen. The Dodgers (63-46) didn’t do much, acquiring reliever Brock Stewart from the Minnesota Twins and outfield Alex Call from the Washington Nationals, and understandably there was little movement on the odds front. L.A. went from +290 to +285 for a World Series win, held at +165 to win the NL and held at -1100 to win the NL West.

The other winners in yesterday’s trade deadline included the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.

Can Anyone Touch the Dodgers?

DraftKings took the Yankees’ World Series odds from +1000 to +850 (AL championship odds from +425 to +390, AL East odds from +255 to +165).

The Yankees (60-49) made some bold splashes, acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies, outfielder Austin Slater from the Chicago White Sox, closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and reliever Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants and reliever Jake Bird from the Rockies. They added former all-stars to an already powerful relief core, all guys who can throw hard. Bednar had a .96 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched in July.

Phillies Acquire Best Reliever at Deadline

The AL East first place Toronto Blue Jays (64-46) didn’t make any big, bold moves, dancing around the edges more. That was led by a risky move in bringing in former Cy Young Award winning pitcher Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians, currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

The Jays’ World Series odds at DraftKings post deadline went from +1300 to +1200 (AL +475 to +450, AL East -240 to -155).

The over-riding issue with the Yankees continues to be the health of superstar slugger Aaron Judge, out with an elbow injury.

Mariners Pick Up Best Hitters on Market

The Phillies (61-47) made the biggest splash on the relief pitching front. Philadelphia acquired fireballer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins, as well and outfielder Harrison Bader from Minnesota. They went from +850 to +800 to win the World Series at DraftKings (NL +450 to +425, NL East +115 to -105).

The Mets (62-47) picked up relievers Tyler Rodgers from the Giants and Gregory Soto from the Orioles, outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Orioles and closer Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals. They went from +800 to +850 to win the World Series at DraftKings (NL +425 to +450, NL East -150 to -125).

The Mariners moved from +1800 to +1400 on the World Series odds front, +800 to +600 to take the AL title, and +310 to +240 to win the AL West. Seattle acquired the two best hitters on the market – Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor into separate trades with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

BetMGM Odds Sift

It was much the same at BetMGM, with World Series line movement post trade deadline led by the Padres, going from +3500 to +1700, followed by the Yankees (+1100 to +850), Mets (+1300 to +850), Astros (+1300 to +1100), Mariners (+2800 to +1800) and the Red Sox (+3500 to +2500).

With the MLB trade deadline coming to a close, the Mets, Padres, Astros, and Mariners have all seen substantial improvement in their odds. The Mets upgraded in centerfield while solidifying one of the best bullpens as well,” said Hal Egeland, Trading Manager, BetMGM. “The Padres, per usual, went all out at the deadline bolstering their already talented bullpen. The NL West race could get interesting with the Padres just 3 games back already. Carlos Correa coming back to Houston not only fills an injury need but also brings a familiar face back to Houston.

“The AL West race will be one to watch with the top 3 teams all improving. While their rotation seems formidable, the Mariners sought to improve their offense with Naylor and Saurez adding more at the plate.”
