As we tie a bow on another NFL season, here are some of the betting highlights from Super Bowl LX last night at Levi’s Stadium in California, with the Seattle Seahawks winning handily over the New England Patriots, 29-13.

Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye revealed after the game he took a pain-killing injection in his injured right throwing shoulder, so that in part explains the three turnovers, including two interceptions in the fourth quarter, one of which was returned for a TD. RB Kenneth Walker III of the Seahawks won the game’s MVP honours, rushing for 135 yards on 27 carries, along with 26 yards in receiving.

Walker had a long TD rumble in the fourth quarter that was called back by a holding call. That was the most rushing yards in a Super Bowl since the Denver Broncos’ Terrell Davis in Super Bowl XXXII (157 yards).

One Bettor Goes Home Happy

On the sports betting side, BetMGM reported this morning that one notable wager saw someone take home $3 million after putting down $50,000 on the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl when they were +6000. That same bettor also had $50,000 on the Seahawks at +2800 to win the NFC, and $50,000 at +185 for Seattle to make the playoffs.

Super Bowl bettors cashed in on the Seahawks covering. The under hitting and only four touchdowns being scored was a great result for us,” said Christian Cipollini, Senior Trading Manager, BetMGM.

Other results shared by BetMGM: The winning Seahawks at -235 saw 31% tickets, 57% of handle; the spread, with the Seahawks -4.5, saw 59% tickets, 53% handle on Seahawks, and the Total Under 45.5, saw 55% tickets, 50% handle on the Under. Walker for MVP at +700 saw 6.3% of tickets (fourth most) and 5.3% of handle (fourth most).

Super Bowl Once Again Goes Under the Total

According to Joey Feazel, Head of Football at Caesars Sportsbook, favourites are now 8-11 SU and 6-13 ATS in the last 19 Super Bowls. And for the sixth time in the last eight Super Bowls, the game went Under the total (45).

“The game was overwhelmingly controlled by Seattle, and that ended up being a very popular side among bettors throughout the week,” he said. “As a result, players generally fared well on this matchup. Leading up to game day, we saw a high volume of Seattle Seahawks Moneyline wagers at -230, far more than we typically expect on the favorite Moneyline for a Super Bowl. On gameday, additional Patriots moneyline bets did come in, as anticipated, but overall, it was a strong outcome for Seattle backers.”

Defence Dominates

The defence, especially on the Seahawks’ side of the ball, dominates the game.

As expected, and supported by the sharp money we took on the Under throughout the week, the defensive units on both sides ended up being the stars of the game.” said Feazel. “One surprising development, however, came from the live MVP market. Seattle kicker Jason Myers drew far more action than anticipated, with his price opening at 75/1 and steamrolling all the way down to +380 at one point during the game. The late scoring was a little bit wild, but this one was clearly in the Seahawks’ hands from start to finish.”

At Caesars Sportsbook, the Super Bowl line saw minimal movement throughout the week. Within the first 24 hours, the Total dropped from 46.5 to 45.5, with some late gameday action pushing it down to 45. The spread never moved off the key number, though they did see price adjustments: the juice shifted by 5 cents on the spread, and the moneyline moved 10 cents from -230 to -240.

The Coin Toss was the simplest market to price, Feazel added. There was never any scenario where wthey would move the line. They opened both sides at -103 and stayed there. Despite its simplicity, the Coin Toss drew substantial interest, including two of their biggest wagers of the entire Super Bowl.

Next Year’s Super Bowl Betting

NFL betting betting the behemoth that it is, sportsbooks were in fast with odds for next year’s Super Bowl.

Not surprisingly, at theScore Bet, the Seahawks and Patriots were attracting the most early action for next year’s winner (21.2% of bets and 33.8% of handle, and 10.3% of bets and 13.9% of handle, respectively). Seattle opened as +800 favorite, and currently sit as co-favorites with the LA Rams (opened +1000, now +800). Among the other most bet teams, the Bengals opened +3500 and are now +2500, and the Lions opened +1800 and are now +1500. The Patriots opened at +1600 and are now +1500.
