On Thursday, around 12:45 pm, police were called regarding a man acting erratically at a gas station in Medford. The Middlesex County city is about two miles northwest of the casino resort owned and operated by Wynn Resorts.

The man, Admilson Vizcaino, of Everett, was reported driving a black Chevrolet SUV. Police attempted to pull him over after spotting his vehicle in Stoneham, which is further north of the casino.

Law enforcement reported that Vizcaino fled. He was next located in Billerica around 2 pm when a 9-1-1 call came in for a shoplifting. The caller told police the alleged suspect in the robbery made off in a black SUV. Around this time, a relative of Vizcaino called police to inform them that he was now in Malden near the casino.

Around 4 pm, police say Vizcaino crashed his vehicle but continued driving until it became completely disabled. Law enforcement says he then tried to carjack several locked vehicles before spotting a Republic Services Garbage Truck. The driver of the waste vehicle jumped out, giving Vizcaino control of the truck.

Police, however, surrounded Vizcaino only about a half-mile later along the Alford Street Bridge. Vizcaino, after initially being tased several times but continuing to resist arrest, was eventually shot several times by police and remains in critical condition.

High-Stakes Chase

Thursday’s chase did not involve Encore Boston Harbor, the sprawling casino resort in Everett just across the Mystic River from Boston. Vizcaino’s arrest, however, came against the backdrop of the 24-story luxury resort hotel.

The incident occurred in front of the property, but the resort is unaffected and remains open,” an Encore Boston Harbor spokesperson said. “Team members are assisting with traffic.”

Law enforcement praised first responders for arresting Vizcaino with no public loss of life or injury.

“It is more likely than not that these officers and troopers saved many lives today,” said Everett Police Chief Paul Strong.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Vizcaino has been charged with four counts of attempted armed carjacking, two counts of armed carjacking assault, armed assault with intent to rob, and various motor vehicle charges, including leaving the scene and property damage.

‘Limited’ Impact on Crime

Wynn Resorts opened Encore Boston Harbor in June 2019 at a cost of $2.6 billion. Its critics argued the property would increase crime in the area, but that hasn’t been the case.

Crime studies commissioned by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, conducted by independent research firms, have found that the casino has had a negligible to “limited impact on crime in the region.”

Crime rates, aside from the pandemic periods, are roughly the same in Everett as they were before the Wynn destination opened.

However, the study did find some correlation between the casino and certain public safety issues, including drunk driving.
