  • The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel has ramped up security
  • The heightened security measures come after a September mass shooting at the Texas tribal casino

A little more than two weeks removed from a deadly shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel, the tribal resort has taken actions to better protect the property.

Local media, including News 4 San Antonio, an NBC News affiliate, reports that the tribal casino has erected a concrete wall in front of the Lucky Eagle’s main entrance. The barrier structure is where one person was found dead and many others severely injured in the immediate aftermath of the September 27 shooting.

The casino owned and operated by the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas has also implemented heightened security with new mobile guard stations, more armed security personnel, and a vehicle screening system that can detect suspicious activity and allow security workers to question arriving guests before they enter the property.

The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle is a Class I and II tribal casino offering 3,300 slot-like electronic bingo machines. Federal Indian gaming law additionally allows the tribe to operate bingo and poker games.

The casino is just north of the Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Missing Motive

There’s still no motive for why a lone gunman opened fire at the Lucky Eagle around 11:45 pm local time on the night of Saturday, September. 27. A quick investigation led to the arrest of Keryan Jones, 34, of San Antonio.

Jones remains in custody on two capital murder charges. His bail is set at $5.1 million.

Jones’ alleged actions led to the death of retired customs and border agent Marcus Antley, 66, and Alicia Sanchez, 32, a mother of five.

Federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have been on the scene investigating the criminal act. The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Eagle Pass Police Department, and Texas Rangers have also aided in the ongoing investigation.

The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle is on sovereign Native land, meaning most laws are enforced by the Kickapoo Tribal Police. Capital murder and other violent, serious crimes, however, are often investigated and prosecuted with the assistance of federal, state, and county authorities.

Despite the cooperative effort, no motive — at least one made publicly — has been found. Investigators have only said that the alleged shooter has a “quiet” demeanor. Jones’ neighbors told local media that he was “a really chill guy.”

Back to Business

Aside from the increased security measures, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel is back up and running as normal. The casino is promoting its recent winners on its social media and is hosting a series of Halloween-themed promotions all month long, including a chance to win a 2025 GMC Sierra 2500 HD ATX truck.

The September shooting came just minutes after the Kickapoo Casino awarded a 2025 Mercedes E350 luxury sedan.
