There’s always something to do in Las Vegas, but this Thursday, two best friends that anyone could have hope to achieve something never done before in the history of the world.

On Thursday, September 25, Joel Strasser and Garrett Smith, of “The Amazing Race” Season 35 fame, are partnering with Casino.org to try to set the Guinness World Record for the “Most Casinos Visited in 24 Hours.”

Strasser and Smith, both military veterans, are no strangers to achieving seemingly unthinkable feats and overcoming the greatest of obstacles.

Along with finishing second on “The Amazing Race,” completing deployments to Iraq, and serving in the Idaho Army National Guard and Military Police Corps, the duo holds 20 Guinness World Records. Most involve Joel’s beard, though they also hold the record for the longest cornhole shot using a slingshot (why didn’t we think of that in college?).

Strasser and Smyth, as they affectionally call one another due to their military backgrounds — and there being several Smiths in their platoon — hope to expand their Guinness World Records count to 21.

Strasser is always looking for our next Guinness World Record to break. This one fits in with ‘The Amazing Race’-style that we just love,” said Smyth. “We started looking into it and came across the Casino.org contest.”

“It was more than a year and a half ago that this seed was planted,” added Strasser.

At 3 pm local time in Las Vegas this Thursday, Strasser and Smith will begin their race around Las Vegas, including the Strip, downtown, and Henderson, where they will visit and gamble at as many casinos as they can before 3 pm Friday.

Most Casinos Visited in 24 Hours

The 24-hour Guinness World Record for the most casinos gambled in has remained at 74 casinos since October 2017, when Kimo Ah Yun and Gary Meyer set the benchmark. Beginning Thursday afternoon, and for the next 24 continuous hours, Strasser and Smyth will attempt to gamble inside at least 75, though they have their eyes set on a much loftier goal.

This record is so logistically tough,” said Strasser. “It is incredibly difficult to follow all of Guinness’ rules and jump through every hoop. I think that’s why the record has stood for almost 10 years.”

Many people have tried and failed, whether due to exhaustion, logistical challenges, or rules violations.

The Guinness World Records mandates that the person attempting the record gamble on a table game or electronic table game — not a slot machine. Strasser and Smyth are also prohibited from using taxis, rideshares like Uber, self-driving vehicles, and hired cars.

Scheduled transportation like the Monorail is allowed, though they don’t plan to use it, as they plan to get around on bikes and foot.

Joel and Garrett are Ready to Go

Strasser and Smyth have their map of Southern Nevada planned out and say they’re ready to go. The duo has been in Las Vegas for several days, prepping and finalizing the Guinness World Record attempt.

Asked how the two grown men, who have families and kids at home, will battle through sleep deprivation, Strasser said the thrill of the moment and past experiences on “The Amazing Race” will propel them to their 21st Guinness World Record.

Normal people don’t do this,” Garrett said in stating the obvious. “We’re not that normal.”

“You tap into a certain energy and momentum when you undertake something cool,” Strasser added. “We know we’re going to be able to do it.”

We have this concept — consistency over motivation. As you get more tired, the motivation goes away. It’s hard. The consistency mindset is that no matter what happens, we keep moving forward,” explained Smyth.

Smyth and Strasser will need to stay hydrated, as the weather forecast for Thursday calls for highs in the mid-90s, with lows remaining above 70 degrees.
