  • DraftKings’ Avello says Bengals still have potential to remain competitive
  • Allen still the betting favourite for NFL MVP

By far the biggest NFL news impacting betting lines is the severity of the injury to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who is looking at three months on the sidelines now after suffering a toe injury yesterday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Burrow Scheduled for Surgery

Burrow will be undergoing surgery. The Bengals are expected to turn to backup quarterback Jake Browning.

In other NFL injury news, Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels reportedly sprained his knee Thursday and his availability for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders is in doubt.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy will likely not be available for Sunday’s game versus the Bengals after suffering an ankle injury yesterday against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday.

Vikings Lose QB McCarthy

The Los Angeles Chargers are putting linebacker Denzel Perryman on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The Baltimore Ravens could be without the services of Pro Bowl linebacker Kyle Van Noy for several weeks with a hamstring issues.

All of those injuries are significant. But they pale in comparison to losing Burrow, who was an MVP candidate according to oddsmakers.

Bengals Super Bowl Odds Jump to +7500

Prior to kick off yesterday, Burrow was tied for the fourth-best Regular Season MVP odds on ESPN BET at +1100 before leaving the Bengals win over the Jaguars with the injury. Burrow’s MVP odds at ESPN BET are currently off the board. Burrow has the most bets (17.3%) to win MVP on ESPN, and the second most handle (14.7%) behind Lamar Jackson (31.5% of handle). Josh Allen remains the MVP favourite at +300.

The Bengals were +2000 to win the Super Bowl, tied for the 9th best odds entering Sunday, and are now +7500 at ESPN BET. The Bengals were +1000 to win the AFC, 5th best odds, and are now +4000, 9th best in the conference.

Success for Bettors

Not everyone on the betting end is as pessimistic with the Burrow news.

“The Bengals odds have certainly shifted, but they’re still near the middle of the pack to win the Super Bowl and AFC, so we’re not counting them out just yet. Jake Browning has talent around him and clearly showed he’s capable of leading the offense with Sunday’s win. The Bengals are often a popular pick because of Burrow, but this team still has the potential to remain competitive,” said Johnny Avello, Director of Sports Operations, DraftKings.

The Bengals are +6000 to win the Super Bowl at DraftKings this afternoon.

According to Joey Feazel, Head of Football at Caesars Sportsbook, the earlier games yesterday delivered strong results for customers, with favourites winning outright in seven of the nine matchups.

“Notably, Cincinnati and Dallas—two heavily backed teams—secured comeback victories, driving significant in-play wagering success for bettors,” he said. “In addition, the ever-popular Over markets proved fruitful, particularly for parlays and same-game parlays, with 9 games finishing over the posted total. This trend contributed to a highly favorable start to the day for the customer base.”

Seahawks Over the Steelers Good for Books

The Eagles beating the Chiefs, the Bills -5.5, Ravens -12.5 and the Lions-6.5 were the best games for bettors at Caesars Sportsbook. The Seahawks surprising win over Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, and the Panthers covering against the Cardinals were the best games for the book.

“Overall, the combination of favorite wins and high-scoring outcomes made the morning slate a standout session for bettors,” Feazel said. “The afternoon games were a push for bettors as the Eagles were popular, but the points didn’t arrive. Bettors are 2-0 on the season for Sundays and continuing their tremendous form.”

Other noteworthy NFL news notes: At ESPN BET, on the Super Bowl front, the Ravens and Bills are once again co-favorites, with the Bills remaining at +550 through Week 2 action and the Ravens moving down from +650 entering Sunday. The Packers (+650) and Eagles (+700) remain where they were entering Sunday for the next best odds.
