- BetMGM is embarking on a wider physical footprint in Puerto Rico
- The sportsbook has facilitated sports betting on the island since early 2022
BetMGM launched online sports betting in Puerto Rico in June 2023 through a partnership with Casino del Mar at La Concha. Now, the sportsbook owned and operated by MGM Resorts International is expanding its retail wagering footprint in the US territory.

Paulson Puerto Rico, a conglomerate that owns the La Concha resort in San Juan, recently announced its plans to expand its BetMGM Sportsbook relationship across the island. The company’s hospitality portfolio additionally includes Condado Ocean Club, Condado Vanderbilt, Bahai Beach Resort & Golf Club, and St. Regis Bahai Beach Residences.
BetMGM’s physical book at La Concha opened in February 2022.
The goal is to replicate the same success achieved in San Juan with the opening of new satellites all over Puerto Rico. That way, residents from other areas will have access to the same quality entertainment experience that has made Casino del Mar and BetMGM so successful,” commented Rolando Padua, president of Paulson Puerto Rico.
When Paulson and BetMGM initially struck their partnership in September 2021, John Paulson said his resort properties are “always in search of innovation in services and entertainment.”
Physical Locations Needed
Puerto Rico’s sports betting law allows only residents of the territory to open online wagering accounts. For visitors, bets can only be placed in person at a physical sportsbook.
Expanding BetMGM from Casino del Mar and San Juan not only provides greater betting access for visitors but also eases the in-person signup requirement. Along with restricting online sportsbook accounts to residents, Puerto Rico’s sports betting law mandates that new users open their mobile wagering accounts in person.
Sports betting is booming on the island. The Puerto Rico Games Commission said handle doubled in the fiscal year ending in May 2025, with residents wagering more than $313 million.
PR Sportsbooks
Puerto Rico legalized sports betting in June 2019, a little more than a year after the US Supreme Court said states and territories could determine their own laws on such gambling.
The Caribbean island is home to only three legal sportsbooks, with Caesars Sportsbook and FanDuel being the others. Caesars operates sports betting online and in person at Casino Metro inside the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino.
FanDuel has a deal with the CAGE Companies. CAGE is a licensed provider of gaming terminals to casinos in Puerto Rico. FanDuel’s retail sportsbook is located on Palmeras St. in San Juan.
BetMGM’s rollout to new brick-and-mortar locations in Puerto Rico comes as DraftKings continues to mull an entry.
DraftKings has long been rumored to open a retail sportsbook at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel Foxwoods Casino. DraftKings is Foxwoods Resort Casino’s sportsbook and iGaming partner in Connecticut.
DraftKings has teased a retail and online sportsbook in Puerto Rico since 2022. To date, the company has remained on the sidelines.
In the US, DraftKings and FanDuel dominate the sports betting market with a combined share of about 65%. Fanatics is next at approximately 14%. BetMGM is at 5%. The remaining market includes Caesars Sportsbook, ESPN Bet, BetRivers, and bet365.
