UFC lightweight division champion Ilia Topuria has revealed why he decided to temporarily step away from the sport, a move he announced last month, citing a “difficult moment” in his personal life.

In a social media post, Topuria said he’s being extorted over false allegations of domestic abuse.
“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title. This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly.”
Social Media Post
Topuria continued to outline how he’s been “subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met,” over several months. “These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion it is a matter of evidence,” he added.
All relevant evidence has been carefully preserved and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material. This evidence has been submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities in order to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property and multiple threats.”
Topuria further explained that his initial decision to remain silent was made “solely to protect my children, who are the most important part of my life.”
He broke his silence, however, saying that “I have come to understand that silence, under the circumstances, does not protect the truth – it allows false narratives to take hold.”
Extortion
In discussing the extortion threats made against him, Topuria said he is “stepping forward not only for my family and myself, but also to demonstrate that no one should be forced to yield to intimidation, manipulation or fear. Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind, and that my life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect, and integrity.”
Topuria added that he has “full confidence” that the legal system will prevail.
“Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal proceedings, I will not be making any further public statements,” he added. “I respectfully ask that speculation be avoided, and that my family’s privacy be honored during this sensitive time.”
Interim Lightweight Title Bout
Meanwhile, the UFC isn’t sitting around waiting, having scheduled a lightweight interim title bout between No. 5-ranked Paddy Pimblett and No. 4-ranked Justin Gaethje at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on January 24.
BetMGM currently has Pimblett as the favourite at -208, while Gaethje is +170. DraftKings has it Pimblett -205, Gaethje +170. FanDuel has it Pimblett -215, Gaethje +164.
UFC Superstar
Few UFC fighters have bigger brands than Topuria. Conor McGregor, who is today known for his social media following and business empire, hasn’t done anything of note in the octagon since June 2021, when he broke his leg against Dustin Poirier.
Light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira, who possesses knockout power and multiple division titles, is also counted among the most feared and marketable champions following his rapid rise to stardom.
Topuria, meanwhile, is a megastar who’s both undefeated and charismatic, has built a massive social media following and strong sponsorship appeal while moving up divisions and knocking out UFC legends along the way.
UFC 326 Update
Four big names have been added to the middleweight category for UFC 326 on March 7, also being held in Las Vegas. Former title challenger Paulo Costa, ranked No. 13, will square up against Brunno Ferreira, while No. 7-ranked Caio Borralho will take on No. 8-ranked Reinier de Ridder.
