The Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) is teaming up with BetBlocker to provide expanded access to consumers in the United States to block their access to online gambling.

BetBlocker is a Scotland-based charity that’s entirely funded by donations. The nonprofit allows users to download an app that restricts their device’s ability to access more than 118K gambling websites.

Installing and setting up BetBlocker takes only minutes. The process doesn’t require any personal information, as the app simply blocks a computer and mobile device from accessing 118,700 gambling websites and more than 1,500 gambling-related apps.

ROGA’s partnership with BetBlocker includes promoting the responsible gambling tool, which is available worldwide.

ROGA was established to raise the standard for responsible online gaming through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to evidence-based practices,” said Dr. Jennifer Shatley, executive director of ROGA. “Making resources like BetBlocker more visible and accessible is one way we put that mission into action. We’re equipping individuals with practical tools that support their decisions and well-being.”

“We’re delighted to partner with the Responsible Online Gaming Association to expand access to BetBlocker across the United States. This collaboration will help tens of thousands of people take meaningful steps to manage their relationship with gambling, regardless of where or how they play,” said Duncan Garvie, BetBlocker founder.

“By working with ROGA and its member operators, we’re removing barriers to support and making it easier for people to access the tools they need — freely, anonymously, and on their own terms,” Garvie added.

ROGA counts eight members, with several being the largest iGaming and online sports betting operators — FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics. Hard Rock Digital, Bally’s, bet365, and Penn Entertainment (ESPN Bet) are additional ROGA members.

Every licensed online sportsbook and iGaming operator is required to offer responsible gaming tools like self-imposed deposit limits, cool-off periods, and time management settings. Every commercial gaming state with legal iGaming and/or mobile sports betting also provides consumers with self-exclusion options.

Unregulated gaming is a different story. With countless offshore, illegal casinos continuing to market to US players, and controversial “sweeps” casinos flooding the internet, a problem gambler has no difficulty in finding a place to gamble online, even if they do self-exclude through a state gaming regulatory agency. That’s where BetBlocker can help.

When BetBlocker is installed on an internet-connected device, the device’s internet is automatically restricted from accessing any gambling URL in the BetBlocker database. The database is updated weekly and includes both regulated and unregulated gambling websites and apps.

Once a self-restriction is initiated on the device, the restriction cannot be interrupted until the set time expires. Uninstalling BetBlocker does not remove the self-imposed online gambling ban.

“We go to great lengths to ensure that BetBlocker is as difficult to remove as possible during a Gambling Self-Restriction, and our User Support Team will not assist you in removing the tool while there is an ongoing restriction,” the BetBlocker website explains.

Self-Exclusion is the Most Effective Tool

Responsible gaming advocates such as ROGA say self-exclusion is the most effective rehabilitation for problem gamblers. The association, through its BetBlocker partnership, will prominently promote and feature BetBlocker’s free blocking software on its website and platform.

ROGA will also work with its members “to explore ways they can make BetBlocker available to their customers.”

In 2022, DraftKings implemented BetBlocker in its online app.
