- March Madness NCAA collegiate basketball Final Four games scheduled for this weekend
- Bettors who had UConn on Sunday are smiling this morning
- In terms of futures, bettors cheering for Illinois
The final shot of the UConn-Duke game in the men’s NCAA college basketball Elite Eight game Sunday created one of the biggest last-second swings sportsbooks have ever seen, in this year’s tournament or any tournament before it, one trader told Casino.org.

Shot for the Ages
In the game, played at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, No. 2 UConn trailed No. 1 Duke by nineteen at halftime. But the Huskies clawed back, tying it late on a three by Alex Karaban. With ten seconds left, Duke clung to a one-point lead after a split free throw. Then Duke’s inbound got deflected, and freshman Braylon Mullins grabbed the loose ball near midcourt, flipped it to Karaban, got it back, and drained a thirty-five-foot prayer at 0.4 seconds. Mullins etched his name in March Madness lore.
UConn will now be playing in its third Final Four in the last four years.
On the men’s side of the national championship, the March Madness Final Four this weekend is now set – No. 3 Illinois versus No. 2 UConn, 6:09 p.m. EST at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, then No. 1 Michigan versus No. 1 Arizona, 8:49 p.m. EST, also at Lucas Oil Stadium.
“From a game standpoint, that three-pointer completely flipped the result for bettors in their favor,” said Patrick Berbert, College Basketball Trader at Caesars Sportsbook. “From a futures perspective, we were in a solid position with both UConn and Duke, so the long-term liability didn’t change much. But for bettors who had the game, Mullins’ game-winning three was definitely a moment they’ll be celebrating for a while.”
Final Four Games
A New Jersey bettor placed $300,000 on UConn ML (+205) ahead of the game, resulting in a $615,000 win. During the contest, Duke’s live ML odds peaked at -5000.
“The second weekend of the tournament was favorable for the sportsbook with many underdogs covering or winning outright. Illinois upsetting Houston on Thursday was the best outcome for the book. On the futures market, the sportsbook is in good shape with UConn the only remaining liability,” said Michael Ranftle, Senior Trader, BetMGM.
Line movement this morning at BetMGM (Open to Current): Michigan +2500 to +165, Arizona +4000 to +180, Illinois +6000 to +475, and UConn +1400 to +550. Arizona is generating the biggest handle, at 18.4%, followed by Michigan (12.1%) and Duke (9.5%). Best outcome for the sportsbook at BetMGM is Michigan.
Trader: Bettors Cheering for Illinois
According to Berbert, on the court, UConn versus Illinois brings plenty of drama. Illinois still remembers that dominant 30–0 UConn run in the Elite Eight two years ago that ended their season, and UConn also took the earlier meeting this year.
But the two teams look very different now. Tarris Reed Jr. and Mullins played sparingly earlier in the season due to injuries, and Keaton Wagler has since developed into a major star for Illinois. It sets up for a fantastic rematch, with Illinois now the tournament’s big underdog, if you want to even call them that. On the other side of the bracket, Michigan versus Arizona is the matchup everyone has circled. It’s the No. 1 versus No. 2 teams according to KenPom (college basketball rankings), and it’s also No. 1 versus No. 2 in Caesars’ power ratings, Berbert said.
“It feels like the kind of game the entire sports world will be watching,” he added. “From a sportsbook standpoint, the setup couldn’t be better. The public is fired up after Arizona and Michigan’s dominant wins and UConn’s incredible game-winning three-pointer against Duke. With those moments still fresh, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if these games push toward record levels for both viewership and betting handle.”
Championship Futures
From a futures standpoint, bettors will largely be cheering for Illinois.
“lllinois would be the most favorable outcome for customers still holding tickets in the futures market,” said Berbert. “On the other side, Michigan and Arizona are shaping up to draw even action. Duke being knocked out did shift things a bit, as they were shaping up to be a good outcome for the book in the futures market. That said, with Michigan and Arizona both strong outcomes for the book, we’re still in a great spot heading into what should be two incredible Final Four games.”
