Raiders’ Coach Chase: Will Double-Dip with Daboll Seal the Deal?

  • Joe Brady, who had interviewed for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job, gets the top job in Buffalo
  • Reports: Brian Daboll, Davis Webb, Klint Kubiak still in the mix for Raiders job
  • Raiders have over $81 million in cap space and the No. 1 draft pick

And then there were three – the Buffalo Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach earlier today, with an Adam Schefter report later saying Brady has eyes on Denver Broncos defensive pass coordinator Jim Leonhard as the Bills’ next defensive coordinator.

That leaves head coach openings in Arizona, Cleveland and Las Vegas.

This report quoting NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said a challenge the Raiders have is candidates don’t know who is running the operation. Minority owner Tom Brady seems to be, along with general manager John Spytek. But Brady lives in Miami and also works as a Fox NFL broadcast commentator.

Report: Who’s In Charge?

His lack of physical presence at the Las Vegas facility is an issue, according to reports.

This report in The Athletic said Brady’s business partner and wellness coordinator Alex Guerrero was his eyes and ears there. Not sure that’s a good way to run a railroad.

Still, former Bills’ offensive coordinator and New York Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll has had back-to-back interviews, with an ESPN story this afternoon saying the Tennessee Titans are set to hire Daboll as their offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get the Vegas job.

Las Vegas Gambling: Daboll Interviews Twice

Davis Webb, 31, another offensive mind, with the Broncos, is very much in the mix, with two interviews with the Raiders already. Klint Kubiak, offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, is still in play. The Raiders already have missed out on a few guys they reportedly liked – Mike McDaniels took the L.A. Chargers OC job, Jesse Minter went to the Baltimore Ravens as head coach, then the Brady news today. Brady had had two interviews as well, before taking the Bills job.

The Raiders have some enticing pieces – TE Brock Bowers, RB Ashton Jeanty, among the highest cap room in the NFL ($81 million), and the No. 1 pick in this spring’s NFL draft, with overwhelming odds having them pick Heisman Trophy winning QB Fernando Mendoza (-8000 at DraftKings). There’s a lot of chatter that star edge rusher Maxx Crosby will be traded out of town.

Still, stability is the issue in Las Vegas, with owner Mark Davis seemingly veering all over the place. Last year’s plan was to bring in 74-year-old Pete Carroll as head coach, who then spearheaded bringing in QB Geno Smith in a trade with Seattle. How did that turn out? The Raiders finished the season at 3-14.
