  • Kubiak confirms rumours in NFL Network interview after Super Bowl win
  • Kubiak credited for helping to revive Seahawks’ QB Sam Darnold’s career
  • Raiders likely to choose Heisman Trophy QB Fernando Mendoza in upcoming NFL draft

After last night’s Super Bowl win, doing an interview with NFL Network, standing on the field at Levi’s Stadium amid all the celebration and hoopla, Klint Kubiak confirmed what everyone has been suspecting – he is taking the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders.

“You guys know I’m going to Las Vegas, I’m fired up about it,” he said. “Hell, yeah I’m going … we’re just going to enjoy tonight.”

Raiders Finished 3-14

Kubiak, as offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, has been credited with reviving the career of Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold. The Seahawks are Darnold’s fifth NFL team, and anyone who watched last night’s 29-13 dominant win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX saw how well the Darnold comeback project went. Darnold was practically run out of Minnesota by the Vikings last season.

Raiders’ owner Mark Davis tried to fast track the Raiders back to the organization’s glory days (they haven’t won a playoff game since beating the Tennessee Titans in the Conference Championship in January 2003) last year, bringing in the oldest coach in the NFL, Pete Carroll, 74, and overseeing a trade with the Seahawks, bringing in Geno Smith.

Mendoza Likely No. 1 Draft Pick

The Raiders finished this past season 3-14 and own the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft April 23. Unless we see the shock of the ages, the Raiders will pick Heisman Trophy winning QB Fernando Mendoza, who just led the Indiana Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Mendoza is -8000 this morning at DraftKings to go first overall. FanDuel has it -7000.

So by drafting Mendoza and bringing in the 38-year-old Kubiak, Davis nows seems committed to the slow build. Then there’s the amount of cap space the Raiders possess, to rebuild the team around Mendoza – over $91 million, second highest in the NFL, according to overthecap.com.

Enormous Cap Space

The Seahawks were up there among league leaders in several team offence categories this past regular season – sixth in yards-per-game (337.3), eighth in yards-per-game passing (207), fourth in yards-per-game rushing (130.3), No. 1 in points-per-game (33.7).

And that cap space will only grow if there’s any truth to the rumours the Raiders are going to say goodbye to star defensive end Maxx Crosby, who makes over $35 million per year.

Raiders’ minority owner and Fox broadcaster Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek had overseen the search for Carroll’s replacement.

“Klint’s the man. He’s a great person and a really smart guy. …. I think he’s going to do great things in Vegas,” said Darnold.
