  • The Dodgers are Moneyline favourites going into Game 7 of the World Series tonight
  • Ohtani tapped to start for the Dodgers, Scherzer for the Blue Jays
  • Pitching props on the radar

Canadian sportsbooks are no doubt looking at the Dodgers’ 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game 6 of the World Series with a sense of reprieve, holding off what will be a massive loss for books if the Jays win the World Series tonight.

So, the focus turns to Game 7 tonight, one last hurdle for them, the Jays starting Max Scherzer, and the Dodgers countering with a Shohei Ohtani on just three-days’ rest. It’s all hands-on deck for both teams now. Trey Yesavage (who struck out 12 in Game 5) and Shane Bieber will be some of the names available for the Blue Jays.

The Dodgers’ plans to start Tyler Glasnow for Game 7 were tossed out the window after Glasnow had to come on in the ninth inning last night to close out the game, which he did very effectively, getting the final three outs.

Yesavage Could Pitch for Jays in Game 7

Roki Sasaki faced seven batters last night so he’s still another potential factor for tonight. In fact, Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts said that every pitcher except Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who again, like he did in Game 2, flustered Jays’ hitters last night, will be available.

There’s no point in going over what happened last night, punctuated by a long ball by Jays’ Addison Barger in the 9th that inexplicably lodged at the base of the outfield wall, leading to a dead ball call. Myles Straw, who was on first base, would have scored there, making the score 3-2. But he had to take third base on the ground rule double.

Bizarre Play in Game 6

That was the type of bizarre moment that had 50,000 people at the Rogers Centre, energy building to a Joe Carter-moment crescendo, sensing a Jays’ comeback, and millions watching on television, wondering if the Gods had just enough of Toronto’s Cinderella run this season and decided to throw their own curveball into the proceedings.

Barger then got picked off at second base on a great play by Dodgers outfielder Enrique Hernandez off a shallow Andres Gimenez flyout, one of the wildest endings in a clinch-potential game you’ll ever see. Clutch hitter George Springer was set to come to the plate, if Barger hadn’t made that critical mistake, which he later admitted was a “bad read”. Barger didn’t think Gimenez’s hit would go as deep as it did, with Hernandez playing shorter in the field.

How Do the Sportsbooks See It?

So it’s back at it for tonight (8 p.m. EST first pitch). These games are exactly the reason the Jays went out and signed Scherzer to a one-year, $15 million contract, since he pitched a Game 7 of the World Series previously, with Washington in 2019 – tossing 5 innings that night, giving up two runs on 7 hits, with three strikeouts in the Nationals’ 6-2 win.

At Caesars Sportsbook, the moneyline is Jays +130, the Dodgers -145, with the RL  Dodgers -1.5 (+115), Jays +1.5 (-135), and the O/U 8 (-1o5 on the O, -115 on the U).

At DraftKings, the moneyline is Jays +122, the Dodgers -155, with the RL  Dodgers -1.5 (+110), Jays +1.5 (-130), and the O/U 8 (-115 on the O, -105 on the U).

Pitching Props on the Radar Again

According to Phill Gray, the former head of trading operations at Sports Interaction, and an industry sports betting consultant, pitching props are on the radar again.

“One report says Ohtani may only go one time through the order starting,” he said. “The under on him for 4.5 SO’s -120 is being labelled as a good edge. No faith in the numbers on Scherzer as he’s at 2.5 SO’s with heavy vig on the over at -178, but it still will be a prop to watch. The 7.5 o -122 suggest the public is on it, given what could be a carousel of pitchers again and two teams that can explode offensively.”

“If I was working I’d definitely be posting a prop ‘Will there be a dead hit ruling Yes +2000’. Not sure if anyone else is but it would be a great promo spot on the landing page and would take a few hundred bets easily. With the swing in pricing this week for futures there’s obviously an opportunity for bettors to hedge their positions and create some arbs (arbitrage). Some books frown upon it, some don’t.”

Sharp Jays Money Coming In

According to Eric Biggio, the Lead Baseball Oddsmaker for Caesars Sportsbook, there’s been some great handle on the game so far.

“How do you handicap the pitching for this one? Ohtani for 4 innings, Scherzer for 3, then what? All hands on deck obviously, we’ll see who steps up for each team,” he said. “Middle relief will be the key to this one in my opinion, so a guy like Emmet Sheehan or Eric Lauer could play a big part. Usually in these Game 7’s, it’s an unexpected hero, so maybe a Tommy Edman or an Ernie Clement steps up, who knows?

“We opened the Dodgers -140, and has climbed up a little to -150, but I do see some sharp Blue Jay money coming. It’s gonna be a fun one.”
