Law enforcement says gunshots rang out at approximately 1:33 am on December 10. Police officers stationed nearby on Washington Boulevard reported hearing the gunshots and rushed toward the scene. The city’s ShotSpotter security technology network also pinpointed the shooting.

Officers located a 26-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds in front of Royal Farms. The convenience store known for its famous fried chicken is located directly across Russell Street from the Horseshoe Casino.

The 26-year-old man was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Police say a 22-year-old man later walked into the same hospital with gunshot wounds, but is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The Baltimore PD is asking anyone with information to call detectives at 410-396-2100 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.

Casino Shootings

Though the Baltimore shooting took place outside Horseshoe Casino, the gunfire was exchanged just steps from the casino floor operated by Caesars Entertainment. The incident comes exactly a week after a 23-year-old Washington, DC, man was gunned down inside MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md., on December 3.

Oh boy, Maryland casinos having a tough month,” the popular X account News From the Concrete posted. The account belongs to Larry Calhoun, an independent reporter who covers major police, fire, and EMS in the Capital Beltway.

Caesars, which owns 76% of CBAC Gaming, the property owner of Horseshoe Baltimore, has invested substantially in improving the area immediately surrounding the South Baltimore casino. The goal is to make the short trek from the city’s two professional sports stadiums more appealing.

The casino has invested in a Topgolf, but its 2021 announcement of a mixed-use entertainment and hospitality complex with a 320-room hotel called the Walk @ Warner Street has failed to come to fruition.

Nonetheless, Horseshoe Baltimore is seeing slightly better gaming revenue in 2025.

Through November, the casino’s slots and table games have won $163.45 million from players, or an average of $14.8 million a month. Should December keep that pace, the casino will exceed its 2024 revenue of $172.5 million.

Baltimore Crime

Baltimore is notorious for crime, with HBO’s “The Wire” set in the so-called Charm City. Baltimore’s crime and murder rates have dropped in recent years, though many critics claim the city has stopped reporting many police incidents.

Baltimore was among the first cities to which President Donald Trump threatened to deploy the National Guard after retaking the White House. In September, Trump said he has “an obligation” to protect major cities and that “this isn’t a political thing.”

The president labeled Baltimore and Chicago as “hellholes.” The federal deployment, however, has yet to take place.
