Clams harvested by a business in Washington State that also runs a tribal casino have been recalled.

On Monday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised that Manila claims harvest by the Lummi Indian Business Council should not be served, sold, or eaten. The federal food regulator cited concerns that the clams may be contaminated with norovirus.
“Shellstock, or raw, live molluscan shellfish such as oysters and clams contaminated with norovirus can cause illness if eaten, and potentially severe illness in people with compromised immune systems. Food containing norovirus may look, smell, and taste normal,” the FDA advised.
Consumers of these products who are experiencing symptoms of illness should contact their healthcare provider and report their symptoms to their local health department. Diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever may be associated with gastroenteritis infections caused by this organism,” the notice added.
Common symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain.
Manila Clams
The Lummi Indian Business is the commercial operating entity of the Lummi Nation, a federally recognized tribe in Washington’s Whatcom County.
The tribe harvests Manila claims in its tidelands. Manila clams are saltwater clams and get their name from originating along the coasts of the Philippines. A burrowing clam, the Manila clam is most abundant in cooler temperate areas, such as Northern Washington.
The FDA said the Manila clams harvested by the Lummi Indiana Business were sold and distributed to restaurants and retailers in nine states. Along with Washington, the included states were Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Oregon.
Clams come in various shapes and sizes. The Quahog, littleneck, and chowder are three of the most popular types. Unlike East Coast steamers, Manila claims are hard-shell claims. Manila clams are small and feature a sweet flavor.
Tribal Casino Resort
The Lummi’s clam business is essential to its economic sovereignty. The tribe also relies greatly on its Silver Reef Casino Resort.
The tribal casino located in Ferndale caters to the Canadian audience. The casino’s website advertises the current exchange rate for the Canadian Dollar. The casino is just 40 miles south of Vancouver.
The Silver Reef features over 1,000 slot machines, 15 live dealer table games, and a sportsbook. As for the resort, the destination includes 206 hotel rooms, a full-service spa, a 23,000-square-foot event center where concerts and large gatherings are held, and a highly rated 18-hole golf course.
The tribal casino additionally features eight restaurants and bars. One of those eateries is The Steak House, which offers “Steamer Clams,” described as local clams with butter, garlic, shallots, and white wine broth accompanied by grilled sourdough bread.
