Atlantic City is bustling, with 2025 marking a comeback for the casino town. For South Jersey residents seeking a career in the East Coast’s gaming capital, new public transportation is soon coming.

New Jersey has a vast public transportation network, but much of the infrastructure is in North Jersey, serving commuters in and out of New York. In South Jersey, public transportation is scarcer. Outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy (D) seeks to change that.

During an event this week in Atlantic City at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, the Democrat announced expanded public transportation options for South Jersey. One initiative is the debut of an express shuttle service connecting Vineland and Atlantic City.

Anytime we can bring more people to Atlantic City, it’s a win-win,” said Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small. “This new express shuttle bus service from Vineland gives Cumberland County residents a faster, more efficient way to reach jobs in our casinos and across the city.”

Beginning this fall, with an exact date to be announced, the Vineland to Atlantic City shuttle will make two round-trips each weekday. The bus will serve the Vineland Transportation Center between Landis Ave. and E. Wood St. to the Atlantic City Bus Terminal at 1901 Atlantic Ave.

Long Commute

Murphy says the forthcoming South Jersey public transportation will “better connect residents to jobs.” The Vineland to Atlantic City service, however, will require patience among riders.

The express shuttle from Vineland to AC will take roughly an hour. From there, the Atlantic City Bus Terminal is an easy walk to only two casinos — Bally’s and Caesars.

Resorts to the north and Tropicana to the south are the next nearest casinos, each about an eighth of a mile from the bus depot. Including the trek from one’s residence to the Vineland bus stop, and the door-to-door commute to an Atlantic City casino could be considerable.

Murphy and the South Jersey Transportation Authority didn’t say whether the shuttle will come with a fare for riders. The service is being offered for one year, with permanent consideration based on use.

Vineland is the most populous municipality in Cumberland County. Located near the Delaware Bay, Vineland’s marshes were found to be ideal for growing grapes by early settlers, hence the city’s name.

Of the 21 counties in New Jersey, Cumberland, as of the 2020 US Census, by far had the lowest per capita income at $30,200. Passaic, ranked 20th, had a per capita income of $37,500.

Vineland Atlantic City Casino Workers

If you’re wondering how many people work at Atlantic City casinos and live in Vineland, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement provides such data. As of August 7, the most recently reported statistics, 246 Atlantic City casino workers called Vineland home.

As for Cumberland as a whole, inclusive of Vineland, Bridgeton, Cedarville, Fairton, Greenwich, Heislerville, Mauricetown, Millville, and Port Norris, Atlantic City casino employment totaled 388 resort workers.

Atlantic City’s nine casinos are employing more than 22,800 people. That’s down from 30K in the summer of 2018 following the openings of Hard Rock and Ocean Casino.
