The Alberta iGaming Corporation today announced a partnership with the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) that will make the RG Check accreditation program a mandatory requirement for all igaming operators looking to get licensed and set up shop in Alberta’s new regulated market.

Canadian Gaming: Mandatory Requirement
RGC audits an igaming platform for player protection tools, like deposit limits and self-exclusion, to staff training, marketing ethics and data privacy. Sites that pass get the RG Check seal, measurable accountability, telling the world the operator is serious about player safety. Over 200 hundred igaming operators in the world carry it.
Alberta is committed to building a safer, regulated iGaming environment where player protection comes first,” said Dan Keene, Interim AiGC CEO. “By requiring RG Check accreditation, we’re ensuring that every iGaming operator in our market has demonstrated their commitment to player safety through independent verification of their responsible gambling programs.”
Player Safety Accreditation Program
Digital gaming companies looking to launch in Alberta go through a dual application process between AGLC and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC). AGLC registers interested iGaming operators (due diligence, compliance and integration with the centralized self-exclusion program). Once they’ve been registered, operators will need to work with AiGC on a commercial agreement.
A number of prominent operators have either set up pre-registration platforms for players in Alberta or indicated they will be entering the market, led by BetMGM and PointsBet Canada. Rush Street Interactive CEO Richard Schwarz indicated during an earnings call this week that the company has applied for a license for its BetRivers brand.
Market Launch This Spring or Summer
According to an RGC statement, to operate in the Alberta market, operators must achieve RG Check accreditation, and maintain their accreditation in good standing while operating in the province. They’ll need to work closely with RGC to ensure ongoing compliance.
This partnership with AiGC demonstrates the power of regulators and responsible gambling experts working together to protect players from day one,” said Sarah McCarthy, RGC CEO.
“Alberta is building on a strong foundation established in Ontario, where RG Check has proven its value in creating safer gambling environments. This proactive approach ensures that player protection isn’t an afterthought. It’s built into the market from the ground up.”
According to reporting, the Alberta regulated igaming market is expected to go live this spring or summer. Operators that hold the RG Check accreditation in another jurisdiction, like Ontario, will go through a more streamlined process for the Alberta market. It will be more simplified, and less costly.
