- The Spanish Christmas Lottery was drawn on Monday morning
- Powerball has climbed to $1.6 billion for Monday night’s drawing
The Spanish Christmas Lottery, the world’s richest annual lottery drawing, is conducted each year on December 22.

Spain’s state-owned lottery company, Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, began the holiday week on Monday with the Christmas Lottery. The biggest and most popular draw of the year in Spain, the Christmas Lottery began in 1812 and has occurred each year since.
The Spanish Christmas Lottery includes 100K five-digit numbers where players can purchase tenths of numbers for $20, or an entire number for $200. The Christmas Lottery’s top prize for 2025 landed on the number 79432.
Each $20 purchase on the number 79432 receives a tenth of €4 million, or about US$470K. The Spanish lottery reported that there were 1,980 decimos sold of the 79432 number.
Along with lower-tier prizes, the Spanish Christmas Lottery paid out more than €2.7 billion, marking yet another record. Total sales for the annual draw, the lottery said, were upwards of €3.5 billion, for a per-person average of €72.
Spain’s lottery program benefits public welfare and social causes.
Powerball Nears Record
The Powerball jackpot hasn’t hit since September 6. Monday night’s drawing marks the 46th drawing in the current jackpot run, which is a record for the most drawings in a jackpot cycle.
The jackpot has to hit tonight, right? Not exactly, as the odds for each ticket hitting the jackpot remain constant at more than one in 292.2 million. Of course, as more people participate and more ticket number combinations are theoretically covered, it’s likelier that the top prize will hit.
Monday night’s Powerball jackpot comes with an estimated annuitized prize of $1.6 billion, with the one-time cash option projected at $735.3 million. It’s the fifth-largest lottery prize in US history and the fourth-largest Powerball.
Powerball is giving players a chance to dream bigger than ever this holiday season,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and CEO of the Iowa Lottery. “Every ticket sold not only offers the chance at a life-changing prize but also supports important public programs and services in communities nationwide. We encourage everyone to enjoy the thrill responsibly.”
Powerball is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. More than half of Powerball sales remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.
Lottery Causes
Since the first Powerball drawing in 1992, the lottery game has generated more than $37 billion for charitable causes supported by participating lotteries.
In New York, for instance, the richest lottery state in terms of gross revenue, with 2024 sales above $10.5 billion, the lottery’s proceeds benefit public schools. Since the lottery’s inception in 1967, New York K-12 public schools have received more than $84 billion in lottery revenue.
The Pennsylvania Lottery, another robust lottery program, primarily benefits senior citizens with reduced property taxes, discounted or free prescriptions, and care services.
Minnesota uses its lottery income to support environmental and natural resources.
