  • Fever futures and WNBA MVP betting impacted by Clark injuries
  • WNBA all-star game set for tonight on ABC
  • Fever are still most-bet team to win the Finals with 58% handle, down from 83%

WNBA star Caitlin Clark didn’t typically deal with injuries during her storied college career, but all that’s changing in the pros, with soft tissue injury issues seemingly compounding her challenges. A right groin injury is keeping her out of today’s all-star game (8:30 p.m. EST, ABC).

WNBA All-Star Game Tonight

Her ongoing injury issues are impacting futures betting on Clark and her team, the Indiana Fever.

Tonight’s game, and last night’s 3-Point Contest, was going to be a showcase for Clark, a captain of one of the all-star teams, and the league, which has enjoyed a boon in ratings, attendance and general buzz and interest since Clark entered the league.

The second-year guard was the leading vote getter from the fans (1,293,536 votes) for the all-star game (Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty won the 3-point contest last night, with 30 points in the final round).

As soon as news hit this past week that Clark wouldn’t be playing tonight, all-star game ticket prices plummeted.

Clark Injuries Impacting Betting

Clark has suffered additional injuries this season alone, a left quad injury and left groin injury being the others, missing 11 games.

The Fever sit third in the Eastern Conference at 12-11, four games behind then first place New York Liberty.

The Clark injury situation is scaring bettors away from Fever futures.

According to ESPN Bet, the Fever moved from +475 to +550, and on July 13 they moved to +650, where they remain now.

In the overall Championship Winner market, splits are: Fever at 27.9% of bets, 43.7% of handle; Lynx at 19.3% of bets, 21.2% of handle; Liberty at 25.6% of bets, 14.2% of handle; Mercury at 6.9% of bets, 8.2% of handle; Aces at 6.5% of bets, 4.8% of handle.

Clark MVP Betting

According to John Ewing from BetMGM, where you really see the impact of Clark’s injuries on betting lines is in the MVP market: She was +650 last week, +2000 on Tuesday and now +6600.

“Last week, the Fever were +550 to win WNBA title, they were +650 on Tuesday and remain at +650 to win title,” Ewing said.

At DraftKings, a spokesperson there said: “The Fever are still our most-bet team to win the Finals with 58% handle. This is, however, down from 83% handle on opening night.”

Hard Rock Bet analyzed its betting data to reveal just how influential Clark is on the market, and the impact on betting trends when she is off the court.

According to Neil Walsh, Hard Rock Bet’s SVP of Sportsbook “Caitlin Clark is a difference maker. We had hoped to see unprecedented interest in the WNBA All-Star Game this weekend, but with her absence, we’re now forecasting approximately a 40% reduction in handle. She’s a star, and her impact on wagering activity can’t be questioned.”

At FanDuel, the money line for tonight’s all-star game is Team Clark +154, Team Collier -184. The O/U is 258.5 (-110), with Team Collier at -4.5 (-118) and Team Clark at +4.5 (-104).
