- Bally’s Lincoln says it’s “grieving” with the Brown University community
- The casino is less than five miles from the Ivy League university
Bally’s Lincoln, formerly known as Twin River, is less than five miles from the Brown University campus in Providence, RI.

Brown was rattled on Saturday afternoon after a gunman entered an engineering building and opened fire on a classroom inside. Two people were shot dead, and nine others were critically wounded.
On Sunday, law enforcement had hoped to calm community fears by announcing that a person of interest had been detained. The individual was located at the Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, roughly 20 miles southwest of the campus. Sunday night, however, the person of interest was no more.
“We have a murderer out there,” said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged that “the news is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community.”
Bally’s Addresses Shooting
Bally’s Lincoln is only miles northwest of Brown University. The casino and 136-room hotel is a popular lodging spot for parents visiting their college students.
On Saturday, Bally’s Lincoln commented on the Brown shooting.
To our neighbors at Brown University: Our hearts are absolutely broken by the tragedy that took place just down the road from us today. Rhode Island is a small, tight-knit family, and when one of us is in pain, we all feel it,” the casino wrote on X.
“We are grieving alongside you and sending our deepest prayers to the victims and their loved ones. Please know that your community is standing with you, holding you close in our thoughts. With love, Bally’s Lincoln,” the statement ended.
Bally’s Lincoln helped some grieve the shooting with substantial jackpots.
On Sunday, three slot wins hit, ranging from a $6,344.90 hit on Fire Link to a $25,529.84 prize on Phoenix Link.
Suspect Remains At-Large
With the person of interest released early Monday, the Providence Police Department says there is no suspect, and the shooter remains at large.
Anyone with information is asked to call 401-272-3121 or contact the FBI tip line at this website.
“I’ve been around long enough to know that sometimes you head in one direction and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so,” Neronha said. “Certainly, there was some degree of evidence that points to the individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed. And over the last 24 hours … that evidence now points in a different direction.”
Despite a heavy camera surveillance network on the Brown University campus, law enforcement hasn’t yet released additional footage of a new possible person of interest.
One of the nine wounded was released from the hospital. Seven others remain in critical but stable condition. The other remains in critical condition.
