The 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event is down to its final table of nine players. And one of them, Leo Margets, is the first female to secure a seat there in 30 years.

Margets, a poker pro from Spain, broke through a field of 9,735 players to rank fifth in overall chips when the Main Event resumes Tuesday. All nine players are guaranteed to walk away with at least $1 million.

“It’s so unreal,” Margets said in an interview with PokerGO. “Right now, it’s like a dream. It means so much, like how lucky I am to live this.”
Margets is the first woman to reach the final nine since Barbara Enright, who became the first in tournament history to do it in 1995. Enright raked in $114,180 for finishing fifth in 1995.
She’s Got the Nuts
Born Leonor Margets in Barcelona 41 years ago, the accomplished poker pro is also an author, motivational speaker, strategic consultant, and reality TV star.
Margets discovered poker in 2007 during a date with an old boyfriend who introduced her to a local Sit & Go game. Initially a casual observer, she became captivated by the game’s strategic and psychological depth.
After earning a master’s in management and communications from IE Business School in Madrid, Margets briefly worked for the talent management company International Management Group before leaving to try her hand at professional poker following early successes.

In 2008, only a year after she began playing, she won the University Poker Championship in Barcelona, earning a sponsorship from 888poker.
Her poker breakthrough came at the 2009 WSOP Main Event, where she finished 27th out of more than 6,500 players, earning $352,832 and the Last Woman Standing title. This achievement, at age 26, branded her a rising star.
In 2021, Margets won her first WSOP bracelet in Event #83: $1,500 The Closer, earning $376,850. She defeated Alex Kulev heads-up in a field of 1,903 entrants, becoming the only woman to win an open event in that year’s WSOP.
That same year, she was inducted into the Spanish Poker Hall of Fame alongside fellow Winamax teammate Adrián Mateos.
With more than $2 million in live tournament earnings over 121 recorded cashes, according to the Hendon Mob Poker Database, she ranks among Spain’s elite poker players.
Beyond the Felt
Margets is also an accomplished author and media personality who has written or co-written three books. Her latest, published in 2017, explores how poker’s psychological and mathematical principles can be applied to decision-making in life and business.
She frequently speaks at conferences and seminars, emphasizing resilience, risk management, and personal growth.
Margets is also a reality television star. In 2014, she competed on “Supervivientes” (the Spanish version of “Survivor”), and in 2023, she won the first season of “Traitors España” alongside boxer Joana Pastrana.
It goes without saying that Margets will make more poker history than she’s already made if she claims the Main Event bracelet and $10 million first-place prize.
