Largely Beloved Earl of Sandwich Closes at Palms

A popular sandwich shop, Earl of Sandwich, has closed abruptly in the food court at Palms.

Should we be writing about Barry Diller offering to acquire MGM Resorts right now? Is that not a more important story than the shuttering of a sandwich shop in a casino food court? Well, that depends upon how hungry you are.

A Palms representative confirmed to us Earl of Sandwich has closed permanently. In fact, it’s already been walled off. Things move fast in Vegas.

Earl of Sandwich has joined the Earl of Caithness, Lord Lucan, the Earl of Essex and Earl Ferrers, whomever they might be.

Chatter is the closure was related to a rent kerfuffle of some sort. Ain’t no drama like food court drama.

When we say the concept closed “abruptly,” we aren’t kidding. We’re told at least one employee showed up for a shift, unaware the location had closed. Awkward.

There are 21 (now 20) Earl of Sandwich locations in the U.S., with Las Vegas locations at Planet Hollywood, Fashion Show Mall, Downtown Summerlin and Spring Valley. There are also locations in Canada, France and the Philippines.

Earl of Sandwich is a fast-casual sandwich chain inspired by the lore around John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who some believe “invented” the sandwich in 1762 by asking for roast beef between bread so he could eat while playing cards. The restaurant brand launched in 2004 when Lord John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich, his son Orlando Montagu and Planet Hollywood founder Robert Earl partnered to create Earl of Sandwich restaurants.

Earl of Sandwich has already been bumped from the Palms Web site.

Remaining in the Palms food court: McDonald’s, Panda Express, The Coffee Bean, Yo Mochi and 604loha Grill.

The loss of Earl of Sandwich might not be headline news, but we consider it a blow for Palms. It was pretty much our go-to fast food spot at Palms.

Palms has a pretty good selection of proper restaurants, but for local players, fast, cheap and tasty tend to win the day.

We’ll keep an eye on what’s next for the Earl of Sandwich space, but initial rumors the rent dispute might be settled amicably have been dashed.
