Producers told the Review-Journal the reasons for the closure are 1) Sphere, 2) superstar headliners and 3) sports.<\/p>\n
The awkward truth is there’s also the fact that this show was getting a little long in the tooth.<\/p>\n
“Menopause The Musical” follows four strangers who meet while fighting over a bra at a department store. They bond over hot flashes, insomnia, memory loss, weight gain, fluctuating libidos and other glorious symptoms of menopause.<\/p>\n
The show’s vehicle of choice: parody versions of familiar songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. (The ’80s were nearly two generations ago, by the way.)<\/p>\n
The show was particularly popular with middle-aged and older women, along with mothers and daughters, bachelorette parties and social clubs like the Red Hat Society.<\/p>\n
The show was promoted as being popular with men, too, but that was more wishful thinking than anything.<\/p>\n
The Las Vegas production featured a number of recognizable performers, including Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”; “America’s Got Talent” finalist Queen Emily; Susan Anton and Cindy Williams of “Laverne & Shirley.” Williams was a recurring guest star from 2016 to 2018.<\/p>\n
“Menopause The Musical” fell victim to the changing entertainment landscape in Las Vegas, and the change has been happening for years now.<\/p>\n
The writing was on the wall when Caesars dumped a slew of mid-tier Strip productions in May 2021, permanently closing showrooms at Paris, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Bally’s (now Horseshoe) and Rio. “Menopause The Musical” was one of the few traditional resident productions to survive that purge.<\/p>\n
Back in the day, casinos subsidized shows with gambling revenue, but that practice pretty much came to a halt a few years ago. Now, the deal is called “four-walling.” Shows pay rent and they’re pretty much on their own with marketing.<\/p>\n
Ticket buyers are flocking to Sphere’s “Wizard of Oz” and concerts featuring their favorite pop stars. Old-timey production shows, not so much.<\/p>\n
Magicians, dwindling. Comedy-hypnotists, on the wane. Lounge singers, showgirls, tribute acts, all going the way of buffets. There are still a good number of T&A shows, but the old standards have largely fallen by the wayside.<\/p>\n
“Menopause The Musical” suffered from the same phenomenon women claim happens when they hit a certain age. Invisibility.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, the closure of “Menopause The Musical” isn’t so much about the production itself as the ever-mutating world of Las Vegas entertainment.
