A field trial is basically a real-world test conducted before gambling-related technology gets unrestricted approval from regulators.

Nevada’s Gaming Control Board requires new gambling devices or associated equipment to undergo technical review. A field trial lets the Board evaluate the product in an actual casino environment, monitor its performance and confirm that transactions, internal controls, security and accounting work as intended.

A successful field trial does not automatically mean the product will appear on every casino floor.

We need to fluff up our story a bit because it can pretty much be summed up in a short phrase (you can fund slots with Apple Pay on bartop machines at Durango), but that’s not how we roll.

This particular test involves a device from a company called Adostics, a privately held Las Vegas casino technology startup founded in 2024.

Adostics calls its device “A-POD” and says it’s the casino industry’s first Apple Pay-enabled digital voucher funding system. A-POD stands for “Accept-POD.”

The company touts the fact it requires no app, login, cashless wagering account, loyalty card or “disclosure of personally identifying information to Adostics.”

Adostics partnered with Genmega, a company best known for making ATMs and financial kiosks, to manufacture the A-POD hardware. The unit can be installed in less than three minutes and works with existing slot machines, bill validators, ticket-in, ticket-out systems and casino accounting infrastructure.

Let’s get into it.

You can tell a machine has Apple Pay capability because there’s a bigass sign. See photo above.

You scan a QR code.

You hold your phone near a contactless reader attached to the machine.

You select an amount you want to transfer.

Are you a “Go big or go home” person or a weirdo?

You choose Apple Pay as the source of funding.

Apple Pay does its thing and your money is transferred onto the machine in credits.

No unsightly, disease-addled paper money involved. No ATM visit, no loyalty club membership needed, no casino wallet required.

The word you’re looking for is “frictionless,” the Holy Grail for casinos.

That’s what makes the technology interesting, convenient and more than a smidge controversial. We’ll get to that in a minute. More fluffery required!

Oh, and you get a receipt via e-mail, which you’ll want to save for tax time. The payment is processed by another vendor, Las Vegas-based Pavilion Payments.

Starting this year, gamblers can only deduct 90% of their losses on their taxes, mostly because our legislators are what’s known as boobs.

Here’s where that Pavilion Payments link goes.

Cashless gambling itself is not new, of course.

Station Casinos, for example, already offers STN Cash, a mobile wallet that can be used to fund slot play. Getting started with STN Cash, however, involves downloading an app, linking a players club account, visiting a casino cage with identification, depositing at least $5 and setting up a funding source such as a bank account, debit card, Play+ or Apple Pay.

The new system bypasses all of that.

Other casino companies have experimented with similar account-based systems. Resorts World opened in 2021 with a much-ballyhooed cashless system powered by Sightline Payments and Play+. They bailed on that system in March 2026. The move may have been in response to money laundering kerfuffles in the resort’s past, but it was probably more about too few people using it to justify the cost.

Boyd Gaming has also deployed cashless technology through BoydPay.

Funding systems often involve casino credit. We play at Ellis Island. Their Moolah program gives customers casino credit they can access at their machine. It’s pretty seamless. The biggest downside is you have to pay the money back. Reportedly.

All these services involve hoops. The new system at Durango is pretty much hoopless.

See, this Durango bar where we used this new slot funding system is called Drink. We changed it to Think, as in “think before you withdraw more money from your bank account to gamble.” We find the best jokes are the ones you have to explain.

The goal of casinos is to have as few hoops as possible between you and your money. The new A-POD system turns your slot machine into an ATM.

This system is unique because it doesn’t feel like a “system” at all.

Supporters of digital casino payments (mostly casinos) say cashless systems can improve security, create better transaction records, reduce money laundering risks and give players access to tools such as spending histories, deposit limits and time reminders.

As a gambler, gross. The last thing we want to have access to is a spending history! That’s like being in the middle of having sex and the person starts telling you a story about how their ex did this certain thing with their tongue that was absolutely mind-blowing. “Time reminders” are an even worse buzzkill. Yes, the sex analogy is still in effect!

Anyway, the American Gaming Association, which represents the casino industry, has pushed for “payment modernization” for years (SHOCKER), arguing digital payments can provide more transparency for regulators and law enforcement while giving customers better tools to monitor their gambling.

In other words: The less friction, the better. And all while talking endlessly about responsible gaming.

The whole responsible gaming theater thing is a hoot. Don’t get us started. Fun fact: Did you know casinos are prohibited from letting drunk patrons gamble? Behold the most-ignored gaming regulation ever.

We look at these gaming regulations whenever we need a chuckle.

To be fair, researchers have identified the same potential benefits of cashless slot systems. Cashless gambling systems can provide activity statements (ew), voluntary spending limits (ew), risk detection (fine) and personalized responsible gaming messages (ew).

As you might expect, there are loud voices expressing concern about cashless slot systems. They often cite the importance of the “pain of paying,” and feel it should remain part of the process of gambling.

You can touch cash. You can see it leave your wallet and go into the bill validator. If you run out of credits, you have to physically get up and go to the ATM. In this short walk (sometimes more than 15 feet), you have time to think about your life decisions and even stop gambling (GASP) if desired.

Casinos go to great lengths to disconnect players from treating gambling money like real money.

Why do you think table games use chips rather than cash? You can toss a stack of chips onto the hard ways without a second thought, but would you do that if it were a stack of bills? During a hot roll, you tip the dealers, cocktail servers and even the shooter generously. You make crazy bets. And by “you” we mean “us,” but let’s not get bogged down in details. You might do the same thing with cash, but odds are you wouldn’t gamble or tip as much. That psychological shift is one of the reasons Las Vegas exists.

Casinos use this strategy most overtly, but they aren’t the only culprits. Video arcades use credits, mobile games use gems, airlines use miles, theme parks and cruise ships use wristbands and retailers use gift cards, all of which make spending feel less like handing over actual money.

Research shows people tend to spend more than they normally would when using mobile or cashless methods.

This is one of about six Durango bars where you can try out the Apple Pay-funding bartop slots. New high limit, former high limit, sportsbook, Drink, casino lounge bar and the main casino bar.

Reducing friction makes it much easier to lose track of how much you’re spending.

Which is the whole point if you’re a tourist. A large part of the Las Vegas economy relies heavily on people losing track of how much they’re spending.

It gets trickier at locals casinos, though. Locals are frequent gamblers. We gamble a lot because there’s not much else to do here. Our locals casinos are hubs of activity, with bowling alleys, movie theaters and even daycare centers. We don’t gamble disposable income, we gamble with our paychecks. It’s ironic, then, that Station Casinos is the company field testing this technology.

Giving local players a direct pipeline to their bank accounts has red flag written all over it.

There is no pause between wanting more slot credits and getting them.

Thankfully, the American Gaming Association (AGA) reassures us that problem gambling affects a relatively small percentage of the population: 90 percent of casino visitors play responsibly.

We are a huge fan of gambling and casinos, so we aren’t the one to ask if you’re looking to demonize the casino industry.

In capitalism, it is the sworn duty of every business to extract as much money from customers as possible.

One can consider the concerns around a service or technology while also being a fan.

The device being tested requires one’s Apply Pay account to use a debit card, not a credit card. The player is getting access to money in their bank account, not credit.

At the moment, the service is free, so that’s a substantial savings for frequent gamblers. Our ATM fees for 2025 were probably in the $3,000 range. We are probably underestimating that figure, mostly due to denial, but you get the idea.

Fees will be determined by how much you transfer to the slot machine. The new system at Durango has a $2,000 daily withdrawal limit. You can presumably ask to have that lowered.

Why is the field testing being done on bartop machines only, you ask, assisting in further fluffing our story, for which we will be forever grateful?

Bartops are a controlled environment with a relatively small number of machines, with employees nearby to observe transactions and assist customers. The learning curve is not steep, but there is one, especially for the olds, many of whom only recently learned there’s a thing called Apple Pay. And smartphones. And the Internet. And possibly electricity.

Video poker bartops are also occupied for longer sessions than traditional slots, giving Station, its vendor and regulators more opportunities to test repeat funding, reliability, accounting, customer behavior and employee procedures.

So, what do you think?

Benefits: The Adostics system is fast and familiar. At the moment, it avoids casino ATM fees. Apple Pay has strong payment security. Customers don’t have to surrender personal information to The Man. Casinos reduce cash handling and gain a traceable digital transaction. Existing machines can be upgraded quickly without replacing the casino’s slot management systems.

Cons: You need Apple Pay, which is only on Apple devices. Less friction raises the risk of impulsive reloads, chasing, excessive spending and an increased risk of reckless gambling. There will be transaction fees. There’s also the awkward reality casinos are not investing in cashless systems to try and slow down customer spending. Literally nobody goes to an ATM when they’re winning. And nobody wins over time. It’s mathematically impossible. Gamblers aren’t playing for the math. But nobody wins. It’s just a matter of how long it will take to lose and how much. Somebody has to say it.

Most customers will use this Apple Pay-funded slot machine system exactly the way it was designed. We can’t protect everyone from everything. It would be a really safe, but boring, world.

You can read more about the new Apple Pay-funded slots at the Station Casinos Web site.

People, including us, tend to ask “What could possibly go wrong?” But what about “What could possibly go right?” Technology is a tool, with positives and negatives as varied as the humans using it.

Used responsibly, the new system being tested at Durango and other casinos in Las Vegas provides a safe, convenient way to keep the fun not stopping.

Station Casinos has expanded a field trial that lets guests fund video poker machines using Apple Pay and a debit card, eliminating the exhausting physical labor historically associated with walking 15 feet to an ATM.
