As mentioned, while multiple casinos are owned by the same companies, each resort generally has its own gaming license, accounting system and TITO validation database.<\/p>\n

If you’re new to the term, “TITO” stands for “ticket-in, ticket-out.” Those are the things that replaced coins in slot machines. Yes, TITO slips are old-timey technology, but they’ll have to do until gambling catches up with crypto, around the time we all get flying cars and sex robots.<\/p>\n

Anyway, a TITO voucher is essentially an electronic IOU from the specific casino printed on it.<\/p>\n

The voucher’s barcode points to a record in that casino’s system showing the amount, issuance time and whether it has already been redeemed.<\/p>\n

Another casino’s machines usually can’t access or settle that record, even when both properties belong to MGM, Caesars or another operator, so you’re scrod.<\/p>\n

Nevada law treats wagering vouchers as obligations issued by a specific gaming establishment, which must track redemption and eventually report expired vouchers. You knew this was going to get boring at some point. Well, this is that point.<\/p>\n

Could cross-casino redemption happen? Of course, but that would require linked real-time validation systems to prevent double redemption; intercompany settlement of the money; coordinated accounting, auditing and security; regulatory approval for the shared system; and rules covering outages, fraud, mergers and casino sales.<\/p>\n

None of that is technically impossible. The asterisk is that owners and\/or operators must deliberately install and obtain approval for that architecture.<\/p>\n

And the bolded part: At significant cost.<\/p>\n

It’s worth mentioning we’re pretty sure a Wynn voucher can be cashed at Encore, and a Venetian ticket can be cashed at Palazzo. They function as integrated casino complexes with combined systems.<\/p>\n

Bellagio and MGM Grand are separate licensed establishments despite having the same corporate parent.<\/p>\n

If you’re bored, and you must be given the fact you’ve read this far, you can read in all its glorious granular detail the details of this casino realm, specifically Chapter 463<\/a> of the Nevada Revised Statutes, “Licensing and Control of Gaming,” also known as the Nevada Gaming Control Act.<\/p>\n

Mind-numbing regulatory gobbledygook abounds in the Nevada Gaming Control Act, but there are also some fun facts!<\/p>\n

1) Nevada gets most of the money from expired TITO tickets. A voucher generally expires on its stated expiration date or 180 days after the bet, whichever is sooner. The casino must send 75% of the value of expired vouchers to the state, while keeping 25%.<\/p>\n

2) People younger than 21 can work in some surprisingly gaming-adjacent jobs. Adults under 21 may design gaming software, assemble slot-machine components or install and repair gaming equipment at a licensed manufacturer or distributor.<\/p>\n

3) Airport slot machines require special approval if they are beyond security. Gaming devices in restricted areas of public transportation facilities, meaning areas requiring screening or otherwise closed to the general public, need prior Gaming Control Board approval.<\/p>\n

4) Nevada law gets remarkably specific about what constitutes a bar. For a tavern to qualify for a restricted license for 15 or fewer slots in larger counties, it generally needs at least 2,500 square feet, a permanent physical bar, a restaurant seating at least 25 people and a kitchen operating at least 12 hours a day. The law even defines a bar as a flat horizontal counter with booze on one side and customers potentially sitting on the other.<\/p>\n

5) You can’t directly load a slot machine with a credit card. Nevada prohibits transferring money directly from a financial institution to a game or gaming device using a credit card. Casinos get around this rule by offering customers lines of credit they can access from their machines. Not that we’ve ever done this, except at Ellis Island, but that was for blog research.<\/p>\n

6) High-limit gaming salons are legally permitted to discriminate based on money. Admission may be restricted according to financial criteria approved by regulators. It cannot be restricted based on protected characteristics such as race, religion, sex, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. In other words, “too poor” is legally acceptable, while the usual forms of discrimination are not.<\/p>\n

Yes, we were using the term “fun” very loosely, but still.<\/p>\n

The short answer to the original question: You can’t redeem your slot machine voucher at different casinos owned by the same company because those casinos are treated as different operations.<\/p>\n

Yes, casinos could make companywide TITOs work. They generally don’t because the convenience to customers isn’t worth the cost of systems integration, regulatory complications and accounting headaches.<\/p>\n
