Poker rooms don’t make money for casinos. They’re like sportsbooks and hair salons and business centers and wedding chapels. They’re nice to have, but don’t really move the needle.<\/p>\n

Many poker rooms have simply shuttered in the last few years. Downtown’s Golden Nugget has brought its poker room back, however, in a new (much less visible) location, and a third smaller.<\/p>\n

But at least Golden Nugget still has a poker room, so let’s take a look.<\/p>\n

“Poker” comes from the German verb “pochen,” meaning literally “to knock,” but can also mean “to brag,” fitting for a game that involves bluffing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The poker room opened July 6, 2026, but the official grand opening is July 28, 2026.<\/p>\n

It’s prime poker season at the moment because the World Series of Poker<\/a> is happening. Other poker rooms around town get a boost while all those WSOP players and fans are in town.<\/p>\n

The new poker room is located near Chart House restaurant, near the lobby of the hotel’s Rush Tower.<\/p>\n

Players are going to love that the room is much closer to the self-parking garage and rideshare\/taxi pickup and drop-off area. Players can get their parking validated, a nice perk.<\/p>\n

The new Golden Nugget poker room is, well, discreet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Golden Nugget has touted “beverage service and mobile carts so players can eat at the tables,” and that’s been widely reported by poker sites and other media outlets. We actually visited the room, and there are no food carts. You can order from Chart House or Red (a sushi place) and pick your food up when it’s done.<\/p>\n

Yes, you can theoretically eat at the tables, but can we all agree that’s gross?<\/p>\n

Yes, there is cocktail service. The cocktail servers aren’t thrilled with the poker room’s new location and it’s a long schlep to their service bar in the sportsbook. We walked it. We were winded. Then again, we are easily winded. Those trays are heavy, though.<\/p>\n

The poker room was previously just off the casino floor, next to the high-limit slots area. The former poker room will become a high-limit slots salon, and the old high-limit slots space will get table games. Our money’s on ETGs (electronic table games), as demand for live table games has waned (and they cost more to operate).<\/p>\n

There’s a temporary high limit slots area near Bar 46, just off Fremont Street.<\/p>\n

The new poker room can accommodate 63 players, exactly one of whom was a woman during our visit, or 1.6% of the players. About 5% of the participants in the WSOP are women.<\/p>\n

Speaking of women, we hear there have been some unintended benefits of the room’s new location, including having to shoo away fewer sex workers. Claude’s Bar was a notorious hangout for sex workers in the past, to the point where casino security would sometimes do random I.D. checks of patrons sitting at the bar just to deter their presence. Yes, we were asked for our I.D. and we are not a sex worker, mostly because we don’t consider sex “work.” We consider it “implausible.”<\/p>\n

Anyway, the new poker room is pretty well closed off. You sort of have to know it’s there to find it. (Vagrancy has also been greatly reduced.)<\/p>\n

The room feels a little claustrophobic, but we are not a poker player. Maybe they like it cozy and fragrant.<\/p>\n

We’re told there’s an unused space next to the poker room that could be used for an expansion down the road.<\/p>\n

Overall, players seemed to like their new digs at Golden Nugget. New tables and chairs are a welcome addition. The tables have built-in device chargers, of course.<\/p>\n

Golden Nugget’s poker room is the last remaining poker room downtown, so we’re glad to see it’s been resurrected and is getting some buzz.<\/p>\n
