Also, this is the first time a Las Vegas chef has received the award since 2011. We are not a math person, but that is &#8220;a butt-load of years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thompson&#8217;s win is also notable because it kicked a hornet&#8217;s nest directly in the kerfuffle, with some foodies up in arms about her win, the James Beard Awards themselves and the proper way to pronounce &#8220;huitlacoche.&#8221; For starters. Let&#8217;s dive into all the awkward, shan&#8217;t we? If you are reading this, Chef Sarah Thompson, please stop here. Recount the votes!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First, some housekeeping. &#8220;Huitlacoche&#8221; is pronounced &#8220;weet-lah-KOH-chay.&#8221; It is a corn fungus used as a delicacy. Among chefs, &#8220;huitlacoche&#8221; is sometimes called Mexican truffle, or simply &#8220;corn smut.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corn_smut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No, really<\/a>. &#8220;Corn smut&#8221; sounds like a way to get around being shadowbanned on TikTok, but it&#8217;s a real thing.<\/p>\n<p>Why are we spending time on this? Because our knowledge of corn smut, a term we are still not making up, shows conclusively that we are a noted food expert, which will come in handy as we pontificate about food and chefs and James Beard Awards. It&#8217;s called authority and gravitas, thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, back to Chef Sarah Thompson!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some background on Thompson from a news release, because we need to give her some props before wandering off into the drama associated with this award: &#8220;Since Casa Playa opened in 2021, Thompson has built a reputation as a devoted mentor and champion of female chefs, leading a team that employs more than 50% women. She extends her influence beyond the kitchen through philanthropy and mentorship, supporting organizations like Hot Bread Kitchen, Friends of James Beard Foundation, Meals on Wheels, and Women&#8217;s Hospitality Initiative. She has also led multiple high-profile collaborations with some of the country&#8217;s most acclaimed chefs including Chef Joe Hou of Angler (San Francisco, CA) and Chef Johnny Curiel of Alma Fonda Fina (Denver, CO), spotlighting their talent and cementing Casa Playa as a gourmet destination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We love the chef already, despite the fact she makes Mexican food, which famously consists of the same four ingredients in different configurations. Do not hate on us for this joke! Corn smut was just a glimmer in its parents&#8217; eyes in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson went to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, in NYC, then worked at Marea (also in New York), where she was part of the team as the restaurant earned its second Michelin star. She later worked at Wylie Dufresne&#8217;s Alder, became executive sous chef at Cosme, briefly worked with NoHo Hospitality and then came to Wynn for Elio (another Mexican concept) in 2019. Elio closed after five months of operation due to the pandemic and its &#8220;associated visitor decline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While we have not personally dined at Casa Playa at Wynn, we trust it&#8217;s excellent, and Chef Sarah Thompson is largely responsible for its excellence. The restaurant is well-reviewed and well-regarded.<\/p>\n<p>That does not, however, keep critics from being critical about this particular James Beard Award.<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement of Thompson&#8217;s award, a lively discussion ensued. That conversation can best be summed up with a term often used by our fellow youths, &#8220;WTF?&#8221; Our fellow youths sometimes use a question mark in combination with an exclamation mark. That symbol is called an &#8220;interrobang&#8221; which, again, sounds like a TikTok content creator trying to avoid an account strike.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most vocal chatter around the award happened on an excellent local podcast, &#8220;Eat. Drink. Repeat.&#8221; The show is co-hosted by longtime Las Vegas food critic (and our arch &#8220;frenemy&#8221;) John Curtas and Ash Watkins, a restaurant enthusiast and supremely likeable person despite also being a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Curtas is an acknowledged curmudgeon, but he also has an encyclopedic knowledge of Las Vegas restaurants. (We haven&#8217;t heard Curtas talk about it, but he has a history of head-butting with Wynn. Not just the place, the actual guy. He estimates sentiment runs about 10-to-1 asserting, &#8220;What the hell were they thinking?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, we realize a lot of &#8220;foodies&#8221; don&#8217;t like the term &#8220;foodie,&#8221; just as many &#8220;influencers&#8221; don&#8217;t like the word &#8220;influencer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Basically, we&#8217;re talking about people who care about this crap a lot. Because to be honest, it&#8217;s unclear how much normal people even know what a James Beard Award is.<\/p>\n<p>The people who are passionate about such things are really, really passionate about such things.<\/p>\n<p>While we aren&#8217;t one of those people, we love a good kerfuffle!<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that raises Curtas&#8217; hackles is how a win by a corporate chef seems to fly in the face of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/about-us\/our-vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Beard Foundation&#8217;s own mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47554\" style=\"width: 845px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47554 size-post-thumbnail-crop-845xAUTO\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-845x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-845x563.jpg 845w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-924x615.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-423x282.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-306x204.jpg 306w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision-190x126.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/james_beard_vision.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casa Playa is independent like free drinks while gambling are free.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The argument that a James Beard Award can be &#8220;bought&#8221; feels a lot like when people say you can &#8220;buy&#8221; a Best of Las Vegas Award. Every year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal does a money grab with its awards, and the losers always tend to say the same thing. Bought. Paid for. The whole nine.<\/p>\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/all-your-awkward-best-of-las-vegas-awards-questions-answered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote a whole story<\/a> about how, while you can&#8217;t &#8220;buy&#8221; a &#8220;Best of Las Vegas&#8221; award, you can absolutely improve your chances with money. When we worked at Fremont Street Experience (FSE), the venue won the <a href=\"https:\/\/vegasexperience.com\/downtown-insider\/slotzilla-and-fremont-street-experience-named-best-of-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top prize in multiple categories<\/a> for its SlotZilla zipline attraction: Best Family Attraction, Best Extreme Adventure, Best Amusement Ride. It won in those categories three years running. What did those awards all have in common? Primarily us, an award-winning digital marketer. Oh, and also a budget to pursue the awards. Since we left FSE, the ride hasn&#8217;t won diddly. Was the attraction less award-worthy after we left? Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>All this to say that while you can&#8217;t really &#8220;buy&#8221; a James Beard Award, there does seem to be a schmoozing element to the awards process.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2025, the James Beard Foundation hosted a Platform dinner in New York featuring Thompson and Wynn master mixologist Mariena Mercer Boarini. Drink. Repeat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, for example, Wynn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wynnlasvegas.com\/experiences\/dining-experiences\/feast-for-a-good-cause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosted a benefit dinner<\/a> to raise funds for the James Beard Foundation at Casa Playa. Judges vote to determine nominees and winners, while Foundation staff do not vote.<\/p>\n<p>The more you understand that structure, the more the &#8220;bought and paid for&#8221; argument falls apart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/awards\/2025-awards-voting-body\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s a list<\/a> of the hundreds of voters and judges who determine the winners of James Beard Awards. We count 506 people. And by &#8220;count,&#8221; we mean we asked ChatGPT to count the number of names, of course.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is Wynn does culinary events all the time, with various partners.<\/p>\n<p>For example, they&#8217;re doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasrevelry.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wynn Revelry<\/a> from Sep. 18-20, 2026. Casa Playa has corporate backing, P.R. machinery, the benefit of a luxury resort infrastructure, national media access and the ability to send talent to New York for a Beard dinner. A neighborhood chef may have better food and a stronger community story, but not the same platform, backing or megaphone.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to fall into the camp expressed by Ash Watkins on &#8220;Eat. Drink. Repeat.&#8221; She mentioned the adage, &#8220;Don&#8217;t hate the player, hate the game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Every human endeavor involves a degree of politics and working the system. The James Beard Awards are certainly not immune to that.<\/p>\n<p>To their credit, John Curtas and Ash Watkins didn&#8217;t just gripe about the award, they put their gastronomic fluency (Curtas is a former James Beard Award judge, by the way) where their mouths are. Even in France, which has the best Italian food. Blah, blah, Curtas, &#8220;chicken parm isn&#8217;t real Italian,&#8221; blah, blah. James Trees&#8217; chicken parm is glorious, second only to the one at Sgrizzi Ristorante. This is how frenemies are forged, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do you think about this mishegoss?<\/p>\n<p>Curtas is absolutely right that chefs tend to be too classy to speak openly about such awards, except in the form of praise. They don&#8217;t want to throw shade at a colleague (and certainly don&#8217;t want to burn any bridges with the James Beard Foundation), but many are dubious about this year&#8217;s selection.<\/p>\n<p>Our hope is any discussion about the James Beard Awards doesn&#8217;t take anything away from Chef Sarah Thompson. This award, like it or not, is a huge deal for chefs, and it can change the trajectory of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>We also get the feeling Thompson realizes how lucky she is to be in the right place at the right time. You know that all her chef friends are razzing her mercilessly, and while the award is flattering, she certainly understands it&#8217;s weird to be singled out when Las Vegas has so many world-class chefs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today we learned the colors are technically Wynn Bronze and Wynn Pearl. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RPgV2dnJN1\">pic.twitter.com\/RPgV2dnJN1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Vital Vegas (@VitalVegas) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VitalVegas\/status\/2069260943457140768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the truth: Chef Sarah Thompson is not Pia Zadora.<\/p>\n<p>As this reference is a smidge on the older side, here&#8217;s what happened. Pia Zadora starred in the 1981 film &#8220;Butterfly,&#8221; which sucked so hard it nearly ruptured America&#8217;s interrobang. Despite that, Zadora won the Golden Globe for &#8220;New Star of the Year&#8221; in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>How? Her then-husband, billionaire businessman Meshulam Riklis, schmoozed the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Vegas connection: Riklis owned the Riviera.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone we&#8217;ve talked to says Thompson is an outstanding chef, and some consider her the best chef at Wynn Las Vegas, which is really saying something.<\/p>\n<p>Do other Las Vegas chefs deserve recognition on par with the James Beard Awards? Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p>Couldn&#8217;t we have just written a story trumpeting Thompson&#8217;s incredible win, cutting and pasting from a news release just as other Las Vegas media outlets did? Do you know this blog at all?<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t end this story with at least raising the issue of how absolutely ludicrous it is that, given all the incredible chefs and restaurants in Las Vegas, we have no real restaurant journalism. Beyond the &#8220;Eat. Drink. Repeat.&#8221; podcast, there&#8217;s Al Mancini&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neonfeast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neon Feast app<\/a> and that&#8217;s it. No, content creators who talk about food aren&#8217;t real critics, and John Curtas is right to rail against their impact on the restaurant business. The ironic part is we are often them. We know virtually nothing about food, but we&#8217;re often asked our opinions about where to dine and various &#8220;best of&#8221; lists.
