Despite our informal moratorium on additional professional sports teams, Las Vegas is, in fact, getting another one.<\/p>\n

There’s a decent chance you don’t know what the “PWHL” is. We were in the same camp until we learned it stands for Professional Women’s Hockey League.<\/p>\n

Yes, there is a Professional Women’s Hockey League. It’s just that kind of misogynistic, alpha-bro condescension that inspires female athletes to choose bears over men time and again. We blame it on the “manosphere,” whatever that might actually be.<\/p>\n

Anyway, there’s been speculation for some time that a PWHL team was headed for Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

On May 6, 2026, it was confirmed Detroit is getting a PWHL expansion team<\/a>, one of potentially four. Here’s the latest chatter<\/a>. Here’s another story with some background<\/a> about how this all came about.<\/p>\n

We can finally end the speculation, also known as “ruining the surprise.” Sorry, not sorry.<\/p>\n

The PWHL is staggering its announcements for maximum drama. The announcement about the Las Vegas expansion team is expected next week (the over\/under is Wednesday), with all the requisite hoopla, as well as us gloating that we beat the five sports writers at the Las Vegas Review-Journal to the punch, again.<\/p>\n

If you include Detroit, the PWHL has nine teams, with 12 being the target number. Other cities have been floated as possible hosts for teams, but Las Vegas is the only one we care about, honestly.<\/p>\n

Oh, and Hamilton, Ontario. We love Canada! We understand there’s already some hockey in Canada, and we’d love to see them get a PWHL team, mostly to kiss Canada’s ass so Canadians come back to Las Vegas because we’re suffering without them. Long story.<\/p>\n

The Professional Women’s Hockey League<\/span><\/span> launched in 2024, backed by billionaire sports owner Mark Walter<\/span><\/span> and tennis legend Billie Jean King<\/span><\/span>. The league debuted with six teams in Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Ottawa and Toronto.<\/p>\n

Las Vegas has been rumored as a “contender” for one of those spots, and our beloved Golden Knights have reportedly been lobbying for a franchise for the last couple of years.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the Golden Knights are making too much money and they need a tax write-off. (It’s a joke. The PWHL owns all its teams. A women’s team is good for the hockey ecosystem, of which the Golden Knights are a part.)<\/p>\n

If you laughed at that joke, you are part of the problem! We are a noted feminist, so we can make jokes like that. Your sports radio sexism, however, is duly noted.<\/p>\n

There aren’t other details available about the new Las Vegas PWHL team, other than they will need a place to play that presumably has ice.<\/p>\n

While they may kick off their Las Vegas adventure at T-Mobile (where the Golden Knights play), that would be an overly ambitious space for the team to play on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

Las Vegas has a couple of venues with ice, including City National Arena in Summerlin (where the Golden Knights practice), Lee’s Family Forum in Henderson (the most likely home for Sin City’s PWHL team) and the America First Center, also in Henderson. The Las Vegas Ice Center is for recreational ankle-twisting, it’s not suitable for a pro hockey team.<\/p>\n

We would float some potential names for the Las Vegas pro women’s hockey team, but we are a humor-based blog, so we’re pretty sure we’d get canceled, just on the cusp of being a noted sports expert. We’ve actually been that for a while, and we even broke the story the Aces would be called the Aces. And we were the first to share (back in 2020) the Super Bowl was coming to Las Vegas in 2024. Oh, and we broke the story about Wrestlemania<\/a> coming to Las Vegas. We don’t have to know about sports. It’s our town, everyone else is just borrowing it.<\/p>\n

It’s not bragging if you bring receipts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Despite being a noted sports expert, we are not all that familiar with women’s hockey, other than some awkward banter about the fact many men who enjoy sports do not consider it a real sport.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, the biggest difference between NHL-style hockey and PWHL hockey is physicality. Full open-ice body checking is not allowed in the PWHL. The hockey played in the NHL is just faster and more aggressive, mostly due to dudes being faster and stronger. If this raises your hackles, you need to get out of the house more.<\/p>\n

Fighting is nearly nonexistent in women’s pro hockey, because women are civilized.<\/p>\n

As you might suspect, the PWHL has never made a profit. It’s pure coincidence this fun fact followed the sentence about fights being nearly nonexistent in women’s pro hockey.<\/p>\n

According to the PWHL, attendance has been very strong, with repeated sellouts and record-setting crowds. Hence the expansion teams.<\/p>\n

Las Vegas really has gone overboard with its sports.<\/p>\n

Among the professional sports we can recall, there the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL), Las Vegas Raiders (NFL), Las Vegas Aces (WNBA), Las Vegas Lights FC (soccer), Henderson Silver Knights (AHL hockey), Vegas Knight Hawks (indoor football) and Las Vegas Desert Dogs (lacrosse).<\/p>\n

Las Vegas is also presumably getting a MLB team (possibly the A’s) and an NBA team, TBA.<\/p>\n

Longtime Golden Knights fans are likely to embrace the new Las Vegas Professional Women’s Hockey League team.<\/p>\n

The Vegas Golden Knights are currently taking part in the Second Round Series of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, something we totally knew off the top of our head as a noted sports expert.<\/p>\n

Watch for the official PWHL announcement of our new Las Vegas team next week, news of which will mirror a dramatic uptick in red-pill chauvinism from mouth-breathers on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Do better, guys. Your status anxiety is duly noted. The gender hierarchy isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and your precious, fragile masculinity will be fine.<\/p>\n
