MGM Resorts has announced its MGM Grand Buffet at MGM Grand will close after service on May 31, 2026.<\/p>\n

The number of buffets in Las Vegas has fallen off a cliff since the pandemic, and MGM Grand’s buffet is yet another sign loss leaders are done in Las Vegas. A loss leader is something sold at a loss (or very little profit) to attract customers with the expectation they’ll spend money on more profitable things once they’re in the door.<\/p>\n

Of course there are still loss leaders, but you just have to look for them, and that would’ve made for a much clunkier headline.<\/p>\n

The MGM Grand Buffet has been in operation since the resort opened in 1993.<\/p>\n

When it opened, it was called the Oz Buffet, inspired by the resort’s “The Wizard of Oz” theme.<\/p>\n

Back in the day, casino buffets weren’t just restaurants, they were an enticement. They lured gamblers with the promise of value and indulgence (also known as gluttony).<\/p>\n

The MGM Grand Buffet is a mid-tier buffet. We know this because prior to hearing the buffet would close, we ranked all the buffets on The Strip and MGM’s was pretty much right in the middle.<\/p>\n
