Yes, Golden Nugget’s Grotto Ristorante has closed permanently and is now being used for events and groups.<\/p>\n

Grotto Ristorante debuted at Golden Nugget during the casino’s mid-2000s redevelopment and was relocated in 2020. It apparently didn’t help.<\/p>\n

Luckily, there are tons of great alternative dining options at Golden Nugget, although none of them are Italian, sadly.<\/p>\n

Golden Nugget, of course, is owned by Tilman Fertitta, who runs Landry’s, a massive hospitality empire with myriad restaurant brands under its umbrella.<\/p>\n

Oh, and Tilman Fertitta is also the U.S. Ambassador to Italy for some reason, and is also the largest individual shareholder of Wynn Resorts and he also owns a sportsball team of some sort and he might also buy Caesars Entertainment<\/a>. The whole thing. We are not making this up.<\/p>\n

Anyway, Golden Nugget has several Landry’s brands under its roof, including Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse (one of the best in Las Vegas), Saltgrass Steak House (one of the best steakhouse values in Las Vegas), Chart House (one of the best aquariums in Las Vegas), Cadillac Mexican Grill and Claimjumper, which is now called “CJ” despite the fact we didn’t get that memo. The brand was changed following a bankruptcy in 2022. There was a previous bankruptcy in 2010.<\/p>\n

The point being there are plenty of great restaurants at Golden Nugget. There’s a Chick-fil-A, too.<\/p>\n

Grotto Ristorante never really clicked with guests.<\/p>\n

Whenever an Italian restaurant closes, an angel loses its wings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Golden Nugget hasn’t rushed to find a replacement for Grotto Ristorante, probably because it realizes there’s a restaurant saturation point, and Golden Nugget might have hit it.<\/p>\n

There’s much better Italian nearby at Andiamo at The D and Pizza Rock at Downtown Grand. Esther’s Kitchen is a stone’s throw away in the Arts District.<\/p>\n

That’s pretty much the story, although there was recently another change at Golden Nugget. The longtime Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Golden Nugget, Chris Latil, has stepped down.<\/p>\n

Latil’s departure means there’s an open seat on the Fremont Street Experience board of directors. Two, actually, because Steve Thompson, Chief Administrative Officer at Boyd Gaming, recently retired.<\/p>\n

We got to know these folks when we worked at Fremont Street Experience. They were very smart and had lots of institutional knowledge, but were not known for being particularly open to fresh ideas. For example, Fremont Casino doesn’t have an outdoor bar, leaving millions in revenue on the table. Why? Because Boyd doesn’t want people to leave their slot machines. An outdoor bar might lure them outdoors. It’s casino thinking circa 1978.<\/p>\n

New blood on the Fremont Street Experience board could open up some possibilities both for other casino operators and visitors to Fremont Street.<\/p>\n

Latil, Thompson and Binion’s\/Four Queens owner Terry Caudill<\/a>, are old-school operators, and together hold the majority of “shares” in the Fremont Street Experience. They were often a voting block when priorities diverged, and they diverge far more often than most people understand. Caudill still has two shares, the most of any board member, but his closest allies are out, so that shakes up the snow globe a bit.<\/p>\n

The bad news is the old guard was the only thing standing in the way of dangerous volume levels on the street. Long story, but the volume level is now so painful, we have trouble recommending you visit, and we used to love Fremont Street.<\/p>\n

A wild card in the evolution of Fremont Street Experience is the new CEO and President, Cliff Atkinson. Atkinson is still getting the lay of the land at Fremont Street Experience, but he is well-liked and has an eye for good ideas. Atkinson was rudely fired from both Fontainebleau and Virgin, but seems genuinely excited about his new gig at Fremont Street Experience.<\/p>\n

Fremont Street Experience faces some interesting challenges, as its golden goose, the SlotZilla zipline, has seen a decline in business (it’s been paying all the bills at Fremont Street Experience for more than a decade) and the Strip’s drop in visitation is reflected in foot traffic on Fremont. As The Strip goes, so goes downtown, as they say.<\/p>\n

What does all this have to do with Grotto Ristorante closing at Golden Nugget? Well, we are not entirely sure. We just know you enjoy knowing things your friends don’t, and “inside baseball” might sound like sportsball, but it’s actually a lot more fun.<\/p>\n

Ciao, Grotto Ristorante. We should’ve visited more often. You even had a $28 chicken parm we never got to try, possibly because if the chicken parm was good, we’d have heard about it, all due respect.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
