We’ve confirmed this scoop with Boyd Gaming, operator of the downtown casino.

Tony Roma’s has more than 100 locations globally, but this was the only remaining Tony Roma’s in Nevada. At one time, it was purported to be the most profitable Tony Roma’s in the world. “Purported” means “we doubt that fun fact is true, but it sounds impressive, so let’s go with it.” Two words: Foot traffic.

A new concept will open in the space in September (we’ve heard the footprint will expand to include the now-closed Second Street Grill area), but we haven’t ferreted out which restaurant it will be. Tony Roma’s was reliable, but it wasn’t a draw. That’s because the neighborhood is replete with great steak and ribs.

Andiamo Italian Steakhouse at The D, Benny’s Smokin’ BBQ & Brews at Binion’s, Triple George Grill at Downtown Grand, Project BBQ at Circa, Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa, Vic & Anthony’s at Golden Nugget, the list goes on and on.

Our prediction for the “new concept” at Fremont would’ve been William B’s Steakhouse, as the one at Suncoast is awesome. Our second guess would’ve been Second Street Grill, as that’s an existing brand owned by Boyd and it just screams “value” and “meat.” But those aren’t “new.” We are ready to be wowed.

Boyd has recently taken to leveraging its existing partnerships. For example, Suncoast is getting Steak ‘n Shake and Huey Magoo’s. Boyd’s Gold Coast just got Charter 75 Modern Kitchen (operated in-house), Tacos El Pastor and (wait for it) Steak ‘n Shake.

You’ll know when we do, of course.

Update (3/18/26): After posting our story, we stopped by Tony Roma’s to check it out. There was a long line. Looks can be deceiving, however. We were informed there were just two severs on duty for the entire restaurant (with a capacity of 120-140 or so), so seating was being limited as to not overwhelm them. On St. Paddy’s Day. On Fremont Street. The management of Tony Roma’s appears to have given up. Cue the sad trombone.

So much money left on the table. Just put her out of her misery, already.

Update (3/19/26): The original version of this story mentioned a longstanding legend that Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal’s life was saved by a metal plate in the floor of his Cadillac when his car exploded. Grok and others clarify that this is, indeed, an urban myth.

Per Grok: “The story that Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal survived the October 4, 1982, car bombing of his 1981 Cadillac Eldorado specifically because of a factory-installed metal plate (or steel stabilizing plate) under the driver’s seat (deflecting the blast) has indeed been debunked as a myth or exaggeration, though it persists in many retellings.

“This detail originated from early speculation by investigators and was popularized in Nicholas Pileggi’s book ‘Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas’ (1995), as well as Martin Scorsese’s film ‘Casino’ (where Robert De Niro’s character, based on Rosenthal, survives due to the plate). Wikipedia and some historical accounts (like those from The Mob Museum) still repeat the claim, often describing it as a fix for a balancing problem in that model year that accidentally acted as a shield.

“However, the claim was tested and refuted on the TV show ‘Motor MythBusters’ (you can watch season 1, episode 6 on HBO Max). The team located a 1981 Cadillac Eldorado, disassembled it to search for the plate, and found none. They also reviewed GM records for the model and confirmed no such steel plate was installed during production for balancing or any other reason.”

“Contemporary reports from the time of the bombing (e.g., Las Vegas Review-Journal) noted that Rosenthal survived partly because he was only partially in the car—halfway out, with his right foot and hand inside—when he started it, which blew him clear rather than trapping him in the full force of the explosion. He suffered burns to his legs and face but walked away. The bomb was attached near the gas tank/under the vehicle, and the blast was powerful (flames shot high, the car jumped), but no verified evidence supports the metal plate story.

“Many online posts, social media and mob history sites continue spreading the plate legend (often as trivia about how ‘Detroit engineering’ saved him), but it’s not substantiated and has been directly contradicted by the physical inspection and manufacturer records.

“In short: The specific metal plate explanation has been debunked. Rosenthal’s survival owed more to the bomb’s placement, his position in the car and sheer luck than any special factory feature. The bombing itself remains unsolved, with theories pointing to Chicago Outfit figures or associates like Anthony Spilotro.”

Update (3/20/26): Update.
