The juicy part isn’t in news releases. It’s what goes on behind-the-scenes. We’ve got you.

Labor negotiations are one of the least interesting parts of Las Vegas, but scoop is scoop, so here we are. Let’s dive in.

A.I. is terrible at: 1) Signs. 2) Haircuts. 3) Not destroying Humanity. (Give it a minute.)

Here’s what’s up: The Culinary and Bartenders Union (Culinary Workers Local 226) is in negotiations with the biggest casino companies in Las Vegas. Those are MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts.

Culinary says it represents 60,000 hospitality workers.

Our sources say the negotiations are substantially complete, and union members will, in fact, receive the biggest compensation increase in the history of organized labor in Las Vegas.

What’s next is the nutty part.

It seems the union is going to squeeze one more P.R. opportunity out of the negotiations by organizing a protest, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 25, 2023.

The protest will take place in at least one lane of Las Vegas Boulevard in front of Bellagio and Paris.

Blocking traffic is, you know, against the law, so there will be protestor (union member) arrests.

That’s right, arrests are not only expected, they’re part of the solidarity theatrics. Solidarity Theatrics would, obviously, make a great band name.

Not only are arrests expected, the union is negotiating with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to determine how many arrests will be made.

We are not making this up.

Culinary is soliciting members to see if they’re willing to be arrested. Metro doesn’t really want to arrest anyone, but the union doesn’t get as much news coverage if people don’t get arrested, so they are asking for 100 arrests. Metro has countered with 50 arrests.

Remember, the contracts are pretty much settled. It can take several weeks to formalize them because they’re complicated.

The bottom line is this protest will serve zero purpose other than to convey to its members how important and necessary the union is.

Like we said, dumbassery.

The union recently held an “informational picket” that also served no purpose in the negotiations.

It’s worth noting real unions don’t do “informational pickets.” They picket when they’re on strike. This isn’t a strike. The union got approval for a strike, but a strike isn’t happening. It was never going to happen.

The fact is every few years (in the case of the Culinary Union, every five years), unions have to justify their existence.

There are a lot of years when members are paying dues and not really getting much from those dues, so when contract negotiations happen, the union has to get as much mileage out of them as possible.

The threat of a strike is powerful when there’s a threat of an actual strike.

We worked at the Writers Guild of America for nine years, so we’re familiar with labor unions that actually strike. The WGA recently ended a contentious strike, and it was seen as largely effective.

The thing about real unions is they have strike funds to help members get through a strike. Culinary doesn’t really have that.

You may have heard about casino employees striking in Detroit. Culinary seems to think its situation is similar, but it’s not. The unions on strike in Detroit are part of the Detroit Casino Council, an organization that includes the UAW, Unite Here Local 24, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324 and Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters. The UAW’s strike fund sits about $825 million.

Good luck finding out what Culinary’s strike fund is. We’re pretty sure it doesn’t exist.

The other aspect of Culinary is a lot of its members are tipped, which means if they go on strike, things go to hell in a handbasket very quickly.

The reality nobody talks about is if Culinary called for a strike, a large number of its members wouldn’t strike. That’s how unions become defunct. The decline of private sector unions is fascinating, and as such, you won’t be seeing any of that information on this blog.

Yes, the Culinary Union got a 95% membership vote to approve a strike, but such votes are largely symbolic, and always accompanied by assurances the mere threat of a strike will help avoid a strike.

When the rubber hits the road, Culinary members wouldn’t have the stomach for a strike, especially when what’s being offered by the companies voluntarily is generous. (Please refer to the part about “Biggest Pay Bump in Las Vegas History.”) It’s never enough, of course, but businesses aren’t charities, and Capitalism requires a dance between what’s reasonable and what isn’t, including compensation that makes a business nonviable.

Las Vegas casino companies have been reeling in record gaming revenue in recent years, and for about 30 months, Nevada casinos have made more than $1 billion a month in revenue from gaming. The companies knew they’d be opening up the coffers, and silly theatrics weren’t required. (One high-ranking casino executive told is, “Workers deserve a big raise and we’re going to give it to them.”) That hasn’t stopped Culinary from Culinarying.

So, the upcoming protest is complete self-serving for the union, and seems utterly absurd once the curtain is pulled back. It’s a show for the news cameras, at the expense of union members who will have an arrest on their record.

We aren’t anti-union, in case that was unclear. We’re pro-fairness and all for collective bargaining. We are a champion for front line casino employees, and kvetch constantly about how they are tipped poorly and often mistreated by guests and management.

Strikes, and threats of strikes, are one tool in a union’s toolkit.

Negotiating with Metro to see how many arrests will be allowed at a protest when a contract is already settled?

Dumbassery.

This saga is already set: Union hosts protest, annoys citizens, 50-100 members get arrested; union announces settlement with substantial wins for union members; union takes credit for those wins, including its incredible tactics like “informational pickets”; union uses dues to build Web sites attacking non-union Station Casinos.

Unions serve a purpose, but in Las Vegas, union members don’t seem to be served well by the Culinary and Bartenders Union.

When people gripe about “corporate greed” and $32 cocktails, they’re really griping about, among other things, union wages. That’s too awkward to talk about, so “corporate greed” it is.

We love bartenders and barbacks more than anyone alive, but there’s a union rule that says bartenders can’t clean anything below knee level, that’s for barbacks. No, really.

Seniority rules don’t make casinos better, they force casinos to create new jobs like “model servers” so they don’t have 80-year-old women wearing short skirts and serving drinks on the casino floor.

The members of the Culinary Union, from housekeepers (GRAs), servers, porters, bellmen, cooks and bartenders deserve to have a voice. They also deserve to not be used and manipulated by their own union.

How does all this affect you as a Las Vegas visitor? It doesn’t, much.

No strike. Another disruption to The Strip (there are already plenty of those related to F1). Business as usual.

As so many union members speak Spanish, we’ll let Google Translate try its hand at our story.

We can’t wait to see how it translates “dumbassery” into Spanish.

Whatever hotel housekeepers make, it’s not enough.

Update (10/21/23): Our scoop has been confirmed by the Culinary Union. The union distributed a news release reiterating the protest, described as “civil disobedience,” will happen at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2023, and will block traffic in two lanes of Las Vegas Blvd. (one on the Bellagio side, another on the Paris side, as stated in story). The news release says 75 union members will be arrested. Again, a compromise between what the union wanted (100 arrests) and what Metro offered (50 arrests). Peak theater and dumbassery will happen at 6:00 p.m. According to the union’s statement, at 6:00 p.m., “approximately 75 hospitality workers to be arrested in a non-violent protest action. Protesters will take Las Vegas Boulevard across multiple lanes between Bellagio and Paris. Extremely limited traffic access during this time.”

Vamos a sumergirnos.

Nunca iba a suceder.

No somos antisindicales.

No realmente.

That headline could’ve read, “Union Members to Receive Biggest Pay Bump in Las Vegas History.” But that’s not really the juicy part.
