{"id":35605,"date":"2023-01-24T22:39:33","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T06:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/?p=35605"},"modified":"2024-10-25T08:55:48","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T15:55:48","slug":"kitschy-statue-of-buck-winnie-and-chip-retired-at-harrahs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/kitschy-statue-of-buck-winnie-and-chip-retired-at-harrahs\/","title":{"rendered":"Kitschy Statue of Buck, Winnie and Chip Retired at Harrah&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A cheesy, yet beloved, longtime fixture at Harrah&#8217;s Las Vegas has been retired.<\/p>\n<p>The statue, featuring lucky gamblers named Buck and Winnie Greenback\u2014along with their dog, Chip\u2014has been the subject of hundreds of thousands of photos during its 25 years at Harrah&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t recognize these folks, you may not be Vegas enough.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35606\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35606 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/buck_winnie_chip_statue_harrahs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Back in the day, paper currency was sometimes called &#8220;greenbacks.&#8221; Cash was also called &#8220;spondoolicks,&#8221; but that&#8217;s just weird.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Buck and Winnie statue was made for Harrah&#8217;s in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>The statue was the work of interior designer Henry Conversano and artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiodoart.com\/chiodoart\/greenback's.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario Chiodo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lore is Harrah&#8217;s (what is now Caesars Entertainment) founder Bill Harrah conceived the statue, based upon gamblers he&#8217;d encountered.<\/p>\n<p>We first got wind that Buck and Winnie&#8217;s days were numbered back in Jan. 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Word is Harrah\u2019s is getting rid of cheesy but beloved Buck and Winnie statue. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XgDakMu4Sn\">pic.twitter.com\/XgDakMu4Sn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Vital Vegas (@VitalVegas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalVegas\/status\/1487582398405484545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Some rumors, you&#8217;d prefer not to have confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the spot where the Greenbacks used to welcome guests to Harrah&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35607\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35607 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/buck_winnie_out.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buck and Winnie have cashed out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Big thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ealeathers\/status\/1618095601383780352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@ealeathers<\/a> on Twitter for the pic.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the statue was tacky, but it was also old-timey and charming and sort of on-brand for Harrah&#8217;s. At least the Harrah&#8217;s that used to be. Now, Harrah&#8217;s is evolving into a more conventioneer-friendly resort due to its proximity to the Caesars Forum conference center out back.<\/p>\n<p>The Mardi Gras theme at Harrah&#8217;s has been, as they say, de-emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, the statue had seen better days, and had suffered injuries during its time on display, presumably thanks to overzealous (translation: drunk) guests.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35608\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35608 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/winnie_fingers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dear boneheads, this is why we can&#8217;t have nice things.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beyond the damage, there was just wear-and-tear, as the statue remained &#8220;interactive&#8221; until the bitter end, with guests touching Buck and Winnie&#8217;s money for good luck.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35609\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35609\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35609 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/harrahs_statue_money.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just in case you&#8217;re wondering, &#8220;Why can&#8217;t they just fix it?&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s not inconceivable the statue could pop up in another location, but we&#8217;ve been informed it&#8217;s &#8220;unlikely to return.&#8221; Which means never, sorry.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenbacks put in their time, and they deserve a permanent vacation from their permanent vacation.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another look at Buck, Winnie and Chip for posterity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35610\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35610 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/buck_winnie_chip_statue_harrahs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yet another gentle reminder to never taken anything for granted.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you got a selfie with Buck and Winnie and Chip, cherish the memory.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas is constantly moving forward, and change is just part of the deal. There&#8217;s more than enough cheese in Sin City, but it&#8217;s still bittersweet to see this remnant of a bygone era slip away so unceremoniously.<\/p>\n<p>Buck and Winnie were symbols of the Las Vegas dream. The one where anyone can win big. And have Elvis sunglasses and necklaces with their names on them. And a poodle. If there isn&#8217;t a border collie or Australian shepherd available.
