Casino Gambling in Maine
Maine Casino Guide
If it's been over a year since you've been to Maine, there's a good chance you won't recognize the state. Maine has undergone a major casino transformation thanks to new efforts by the Maine Gambling Control Board to make the state more appealing to fans of casino games. While Maine Internet casino players in Portland and Lewison might welcome the changes, others don't think the changes go far enough to compete with what's happening outside of state lines. History of Maine Gambling
Maine's casino gambling history is actually pretty fresh. In 2012, the Maine Gambling Control Board approved the first full-fledged casino in Maine. The old Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway became Hollywood Casino Bangor, and a bunch of new table games hit the casino floor, putting Maine on par with all the legit online casinos in terms of game selection.
Up until 2012, Maine didn't have much of a legal casino history. With the approval of the casino also came the licensing of gaming products distributors. Prior to 2012, it was actually against the law to sell poker chips, cards, or table games supplies in Maine without a license - and no one had a license.
Local Casino Venues
There are two places to play casino games in Maine legally - the Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway and Oxford Casino. As of 2016, both properties offer slot machines and table game favorites, much like all the ones you'd find at a Maine online gambling casino site. The Oxford Casino property is located close to the New Hampshire border, attracting residents from both Maine and New Hampshire, a state that doesn't offer casino gambling within its borders.
Casino Gambling Age Restrictions
Did you know you're eligible to gamble in Maine at only 16 years old? That's true if you want to play bingo. But if you're interested in playing at a land-based casino or at an online gambling casino in Maine, you need to be 21 years old. The same goes for virtually all forms of online gambling, with the exception of online bingo, which requires a minimum gambling age of 18.
The State of Online Gambling in Maine
Gambling in Maine is pretty fresh. With casino gambling at land-based sites still in its early stages, it's unlikely that the state of Maine will jump into creating a Maine casino online website. Residents of Maine or more likely to see an expansion of bricks and mortar casinos before a state-run Internet gambling site in Maine pops up.
But stranger things have happened. With New York and Nevada legalizing online gambling within borders, other states may be quick to jump on board. And as more and more states discover the benefits that come with offering online gambling, Maine might jump at the opportunity to increase revenue in the state.
The Future of Maine Casino Gambling
If this were 2011, it'd be safe to say that Maine casino gambling was downright disappointing for gamblers in Maine. But the state came through in 2012 by creating two large casino properties in Maine. Online casinos are flourishing (although they're technically all located outside of Maine). And gamblers from Auburn to Bangor have lots of choices in where and how they play casino games.
