Casino Gambling in Kansas

Kansas Casino Guide

While many states tend to be anti-gambling, Kansas isn't one of them. In fact, the state runs its own lottery, allows reservation casinos, and is currently venturing into resort casinos that are owned and operated by the state. And while lots of other states have shunned poker, Kansas permits live poker at all its state-run casinos and reservation casinos.

So you'd think that a state with such a gambling friendly vibe would have no problem getting a Kansas online gambling bill passed. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. Kansas hasn't even looked at licensing online casinos or running one of their own. But that doesn't mean there's a big shortage of legit online casinos to play at from the comfor of our home in Wichita, Overland Park or Kansas City. Read on for the whole story.

History of Kansas Gambling

Kansas Casinos

Kansas gambling history - at least the legal version of it - dates back to 1986 when the government amended their constitution to allow for a state lottery. With the lottery providing the state with much-needed funds, the government decided to venture into land-based casino gambling. So in 2007, they passed a law to expand the lottery.

Today, in addition to slots and table games, Kansas gamblers can find live poker at most of the casinos - both reservation and state-run - in Kansas. Online casino players who are used to big game selection will find the type of game selection that rivals what you'd find on the Internet.

Local Casino Venues

There are three land-based, state-run casinos in Kansas, plus five additional Native American casino properties in the state. The game selection and size of the gaming floor vary from casino property to casino property, but for the most part the selection will appease most Kansas online casino players. Many of the properties offer dining selections for casino gamblers, and several properties have a hotel onsite or nearby. Kansas online gambling fans will find WiFi access at most hotels, which comes in handy for hitting a legit Kansas casino gambling online site (just in case the land-based casino doesn't offer the game you're after).

Casino Gambling Age Restrictions

To play at land-based casinos and at gambling online Kansas websites, you must be 21 years old. Make sure you understand this before you venture to play at an online casino. Many sites list 18 as the minimum gambling age, but they're basing this on European age requirements, not American. That said, if you're 18 years old, you're free to play the lottery or bingo, or legally bet at the racetrack.

The State of Online Gambling in Kansas

Most Kansas casinos are fairly spread out and not that easy to get to for everyone. With that in mind, and with neighboring states upping the ante with land-based casinos and online legislation of their own, you'd think that the government would be interested in exploring legal online gambling. Kansas residents, however, should note that this isn't the case. The government doesn't seem to have much of an interest in regulating online gambling. If they did, they'd likely run the online casino as opposed to licensing out online gaming to private enterprise.

But even without state intervention into online gambling in Kansas, residents have lots of options in the thousands of online casinos and poker sites that are open to Americans playing from Olathe and all over Kansas. And a 2012 Department of Justice ruling clarified that playing at an online casino doesn't violate federal law.

The Future of Kansas Casino Gambling

Gamblers based in Kansas have no shortage of gambling options. And the history of Kansas gambling legislation means that the government could be successful at expanding online gambling in Kansas if they choose to. But even without legislation, Kansas is pretty free when it comes to Internet Kansas casinos and land-based gambling in general.
