History of Arizona Casino Gambling

Arizona Casinos

In the 1990s, there were a lot of back and forth legal changes within the state government and within the Arizona Indian tribes. And all those changes led to mass confusion. Several Indian casinos that offered slot machines found themselves being raided by the state.

That all changed in 1992 when the Arizona state government signed a Tribal-State Gaming Compact with a first tribe, followed by 15 more between 1992 and 1994. And in 1998, another one was signed with a 17th tribe. While the compacts don't govern Arizona online gambling, they do give permission to the Arizona tribes to run and manage their own land-based casinos. And in Arizona, your choices are seemingly endless.

Casino Properties

There are 22 Indian casinos located within Arizona state lines. All of them are run by Arizona Indian tribes. Unlike some other states that limit their Indian casinos to just slots, Arizona's land-based casinos rival what you'd find at an online casino. Arizona properties include casino table games like blackjack and three card poker. And many casinos even feature a poker room.

Casino Gambling Age Restrictions

To play at an online casino, Arizona players have to be 21 years old. That's because to play at a land-based casino, the state law dictates that you must also be 21 years old. While the Indian tribes are able to run and manage their casino properties, they aren't permitted to skirt the national drinking age and casino playing law, which remains at 21 years old.

The State of Online Gambling in Arizona

Arizona seems to be a fairly neutral state when it comes to casino online Arizona legislation. The state doesn't seem to want to get involved with the hassle of setting up Internet gambling, but they're not going after people who play at online casinos from within state borders. A lot of that likely has to do with the many compacts signed with the Arizona tribes.

The last thing the government of Arizona wants to do is cause an unnecessary riff with the operators of the land-based casinos. And you can be sure that if there were any talk of state legislation, the tribes would want some sort of control of casino online Arizona operations.

The Future of Arizona Casino Gambling

While there's no sign of impending legislation coming soon, gambling online in Arizona is easy thanks to all the online casino sites and poker rooms that cater to Arizona casino gamblers. It's easy to connect, no matter where in Arizona you live. And if you feel bad about not giving those Indian casinos your business, don't worry. In many cases, you're supporting other Indian tribes located elsewhere. Many of the online casinos are located on an Indian reserve up in Canada.
