FIFA 18 developer EA Sports has officially announced its 2018 FUT Team of the Year with the goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and attackers all now being revealed, after eleven players were chosen from a shortlist of 55 players in a 4-3-3 formation.
David De Gea has taken his place between the sticks in the elite team. The Manchester United stopper pipped rival nominees to the spot, including Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, and Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon.
De Gea has received wide praise for his performances with United over the past 12 months. His impressive form from last season has carried over into the 2017/18 Premier League season where he has kept an impressive 13 clean sheets in 23 league matches.
There was a lot of competition for the four man back-line in the FUT Team of the Year. The four players that were eventually chosen included PSG right back Dani Alves, Real Madrid left back Marcelo, AC Milan centre back Leonardo Bonucci, and Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos.
It is no surprise that Real Madrid have two of the back-line spots due to their superb run to the Champions League trophy last season. This saw them become the first club to retain the trophy in its modern format.
Alves has also defied the critics by proving that age is just a number. Many thought his move to the French Ligue 1 champions was simply one last pay day to a retirement home. However, his displays in both domestic and European action have won widespread praise.
Bonucci is also regarded as one of the most talented centre backs in the game right now. He played a key role in helping Juventus reach the Champions League Final last year. His shock move to Serie A rivals AC Milan has only seen his reputation grow.
Other nominees for the positions consisted of highly-rated players such as Barcelona’s Jordi Alba, Chelsea’s David Luiz, Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, and Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.
Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante were revealed as the players selected to be included in the three-man midfield, leaving fans of the game buzzing at the thought of getting their hands on the special player packs.
All three players deservedly take their place in the elite team. De Bruyne has been a key figure for City in their superb start to the 2017/18 Premier League season that has seen the club storm to the top of the league table. This included an undefeated run of results that stretched from April 2017 until their recent 4-3 to Liverpool at Anfield on 14th January, 2018.
Modric has earned praise from across Europe for his performances in a Real Madrid side that won the 2016/17 Champions League. Zinedine Zidane’s side might be enduring a difficult spell in La Liga at the moment but Modric’s performances across the year warrant the recognition he has received.
Kante was awarded the 2017 Players’ Player of the Year as he played a vital role in helping Chelsea secure the 2016/17 Premier League title. The French international is widely regarded as the best defensive midfielder in football and his inclusion in the FIFA 18 TOTY will be of little surprise to anyone playing the game.
The three players controversially made the team ahead of a selection of other popular midfield players from across the world. The players that just missed the cut included Tottenham’s Dele Alli, Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, Real Madrid’s Isco, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, and PSG’s Marco Verratti.
Not many football fans will be surprised by the three players chosen to lead the FUT TOTY front line. It was never really in doubt that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and Tottenham’s Harry Kane would be the special ones.
Messi continued in very much the form that has become expected of him. He finished as the 2016/17 La Liga top scorer, won the 2017 European Golden Shoe award, and played a crucial part in helping Argentina reach the 2018 World Cup. This season he has already scored 17 goals in 19 league matches.
Ronaldo won his fifth FIFA Ballon d’Or award, was part of the Real Madrid side that won the 2016/17 Champions League and 2016/17 La Liga title, and helped his club side win the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup.
Kane has become one of the most sought-after strikers in world football. He finished the 2016/17 Premier League season as the league’s top scorer for a second season running. The Tottenham striker also won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year and the FSF Player of the Year for 2017.
A number of other strikers from the global stage narrowly missed out on inclusion. These included Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, PSG’s Neymar, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.
How Does TOTY Work?
EA Sports release the different players in the various positions across the pitch over the course of the week. The players chosen will then be included in special packs for a limited period of time.
TOTY players have increased player ratings and are displayed on a uniquely colored card in FUT.
Once players acquire these special players, they remain in the game. Players can choose whether to keep the TOTY players and play them in their online matches or they can look to sell the players on and make a bit of in-game coin profit from their sale.
TOTY player packs are just some of a number of special edition player packs that EA Sports release throughout the year. Team of the Week player packs are available each week and they are decided based on how players perform across the leagues for their club.
Other special edition packs include FUTMAS (Christmas-themed), St Patrick’s Day, Team of the Season, Ones to Watch, Ultimate Scream (Halloween-themed), Path to Glory, Record Breakers, and World Cup.
